Re: Name Meanings
I kinda think Ran is a name of a flower( in japonese), i don't remember witch exactly........
When you have eliminated the impossible, wathever remains , however improbable , must be the truth .
Shinichi Kudo
Courage is a word of justice, it means the quality if mind that enables one to face apprehension , with confidence and resolution, it is not right to use it as an excuse to kill someone.

As Teppei already said 8):
Teppei wrote: This is kind of a cool topic, as the names in DC both have meanings in themselves (e.g., Ran = orchid) and are often allusions to famous detective stories or writers (Ran from Edogawa Ranpo).

Does Agasa Hakase allude to Agatha Christie?

Re: Name Meanings
Yeah, I love how Aoyama also lampshades his own references in the manga, like when Jodie said Megure was just like Jules Maigret, or when the guests couldn't figure out Kogorou's name and were like "...Akechi Kogorou? No hang on"
This is a guess, but maybe Yamato Kansuke (大和 敢助) is based off of the samurai Yamamoto Kansuke?
"Yamato" refers to olden Japan and the characters for "Kansuke" mean tragic and assist, according to the dictionary I use (I can't get Rikaichan to work on my browser, so http://kanjidict.stc.cx/dict).

Re: Name Meanings
Kudou -> comes from detective Kudou Shunsaku 工藤俊作
(Kudou Yusaku's name is 工藤 優作)
Also, Kudou Shunsaku's great friend is a police officer called Hattori! haha
This is also how Gosho got "Kudou of the East, Hattori of the West" (as mentioned in the end flap of volume 18)
Haibara's name comes from V.I. Warshawski ("Ai") and Cordelia Gray ("ç

Her name comes from Ellery Queen. ("Eri" is "Ellery" when spoken quickly? lol)Tenken wrote:

Re: Name Meanings
Just found a list about the meanings of the Kanji in characters names on one of Miyano-samas old pages. Here is a link:
http://www.geocities.com/miyanosama/Japanese/Kanji_DC.htm
I like the ones for the Detctive boys
:
Ayumi: walking+pretty
Genta: origin+fat (honestly-why would you ever give your child a name with this sort of Kanji meaning???)
Mitsuhiko: light+excellent

Oookay, this is cool. KANJI FOREVER!!!Sayumi wrote: Just found a list about the meanings of the Kanji in characters names on one of Miyano-samas old pages. Here is a link:

But Heiji doesn't nessasarily need to mean "flat+second", it could mean "peace+second".
I like Yukiko's. "existence+rare+child".
