Case Closed Volume 27 (English Release)
Case Closed Volume 27 released this week, and with it, the first appearance of Jodie. I've been wondering how Viz would translate her, since she originally speaks some english. Basically, she speaks broken english (however, the other characters supposively speak japanese, it's very confusing) and there is no indication of what was originally said in english. Other than that, it was a pretty good volume, no major changes were made.

I have the volume. Basically, she says stuff like "My Name Jodie Santemillion." She only speaks that way where she originally spoke her odd japanese.

That makes sense. Just pretend that they are speaking Japanese. The rest of the characters speak well, and Jodie does not speak well. Just apply it but with an English translation.

I think Viz has been doing a decent job with the series. Heji's Osaka accent isn't too bad either. (For those who don't read CC, in the english version he uses slang) (Whatcha and such).I only wish they had indicated Jodie's original English.

I thought Jodie only intentionally spoke broken Japanese around strangers.
But broken ENGLISH ?
She's a natural American who taught English in Japan, so that doesn't make sense in any way. Say it another way: there's no reason for her to pretend speaking broken ENGLISH, right?

Well, since it's all in English, then they have to break it somewhere.Tenken wrote: I thought Jodie only intentionally spoke broken Japanese around strangers.

Maybe they try to make Jodie to act like a foreigner (not from the US). This could work. Jodie: "Hey me is from Sweden!" And then it'll be a turning point, when it is realised that she is an FBI.

Nah, better to just have it all take place in Japan, have a backthought that they're supposed to be speaking Japanese, and she's just speaking broken Japanese when the english doesn't make sense.
Would've been easier if they didn't try to localize everything in the first dozen volumes though...

This is correct. However, the manga still takes place in Japan. (Who knows what the anime will do, if it ever reaches that point). It's not a bad job, about the only thing they can do with the story taking place in Japan.GinRei wrote: Nah, better to just have it all take place in Japan, have a backthought that they're supposed to be speaking Japanese, and she's just speaking broken Japanese when the english doesn't make sense.

If the anime makes it that far, I suspect Funi will probably just make her use an accent or dialect to represent when she would normally speak oddly.

With all the Blue Ray thing going on right now I think it gives Funi a good excuse to release everything again and Re-do what has been done, and hire somebody that knows how the current story is developing so they can tell them, hey don't change this or that because is gonna affect the plot later, you know what I mean? ^_^

I don't see them redoing it. The only reason DBZ had some parts redone was to keep the voice actors consistant with the later episodes.

That doesn't make sense at all. You're reading a translation of a Japanese text in which one character speaks broken Japanese. Since it's translated in English, it would logically translate to broken English. You know, like watching a subbed Conan episode.Tenken wrote: I thought Jodie only intentionally spoke broken Japanese around strangers.
