Devil's advocate as far as helping someone in need:

This can seriously bite you in the ass, if the person you helped is at all money grubbing and/or dissatisfied with your helping of them. I think the example usually given is: You try to convince someone not to jump off a building, they hesitate and hit a scaffolding instead, with brain damage/permanent disfigurement/disability and decide to blame=sue you for it. Even if the case doesn't hold up in court, you're out a lot of time, money, stress...
