Not only are they hard to squish, they like to suck blood ... from your face. They stalk you when you are asleep and hide in your bed. Did I mention you can become sensitized to their bites and get spreading welts that last for three days? They also are the vectors for Chagas disease, which is a chronic disease that can cause cardiomyopathy, digestive system damage, and neuritis. The varieties in the US don't seem to transmit it because they are kind enough to poop on your walls and bed rather than directly on the place they were feeding from. They aren't so lucky in Mexico and further south.

Before I moved to an area where there were weren't any, I'd pitch a tent in my room for the entire spring season. We could get a fifty to a hundred a season.

The varieties in the US don't seem to transmit it because they are kind enough to poop on your walls and bed rather than directly on the place they were feeding from.

In this case, my "Encyclopedia of Dangerous Insects" that I had when I was a kid lied to me. It said they all did that, and that basically to be bitten by one of these bugs meant certain, horrific death. I spent lots of terrified seven-year-old nights with a blanket wrapped around my mouth.

I wish you and your facts had been around to comfort me then, Chekhov. But it looks like you were fighting your own battles. (Fifty?? O.O)

meh, I was stung by bees four times in my life already and I don't ever recall it being too painful (actually, one of these four times it was actually a hornet, dunno how much difference it makes). tbh, I usually don't even know I was stung until a few minutes later when I find their sting inside my feet (they always go to the leg.......or more correctly, two out of the four times were because I stepped on them barefoot).

I am aware that bees are not the top of the totem pole when it comes to evil insects that attack while you sleep, however they're pretty high up there for me. But yes, I'm glad I don't have bugs giving me horrible diseases in my sleep.

Some other people I mentioned this to blamed the bees on vuvuzelas as well. After all, how do you think vuvuzelas make that sound? They make lots of bees.


Also, I would like to make it known that on my drive home today, I had the windows down and a bee (one of the fuzzy types) flew straight into my window, smacking me on the side of the head. It later made its way out of the opposite window a few minutes later, I hope it never finds its way home.
