12h VS 24h time notation

I decided to switch to 24h notation today. For some reason 12h format doesn't seem logical to me anymore.

Which time format do you use? Is it different from the official notation of your country?

We don't us pm and am here so I always mix those two up and sometimes I miss them when reading and then I just suppose it's in the morning. When talking in my native language this is not a problem so then it doesn't matter, not when reading for that matter either.

12h can be misused more easily than the 24h format.
Eg Some write 12:30 PM to mean 00:30. It's happening a lot here. In 24h/23h59m system, even if you write 24:30 no one would confuse it as 30 minutes after noon.

as for what time I use, gotta go with Unix time. It's just so much more epoch.

This is my suggestion to improve the 12h notation.
AM 12 11 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 |noon| 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 PM

00:00 in that system would be shared by 12:00 AM and 12:00PM of the previous day.
It's considered a minor bug and it will be fixed by the time the next stable version of the Linux kernel is released.

you're suggesting that time counts down during the AM rather than just remembering that it switches at 12? A much simpler suggestion would just be to rename the "12" hours into "00" hours.

I mean AM/PM isn't exactly rocket surgery.

If AM means "before noun" and PM means "after noon", then it's natural to count down until noon and count normally until the end of the day. 12 hours before  noon = midnight.

An easier way would be 00:00 AM to be midnight, rather than 12:00 AM, but it's not radical enough.

I still fail to see how it would be more natural to completely reverse the direction of time counting than to just make 12:00 = 00:00. I mean, sure, years in BC count down as they become more current, but those are much less finely grained than hours/minutes/seconds, and it's in the past, so nobody actually has to deal with it in their life.

The only reason I would say it seems so convoluted to you is that you don't use it on a regular basis. I mean, there's nothing wrong with people in England driving on the left side of the road either, but it's certainly confusing when you go over there and try to drive on the road after having driven on the right side all your life.

Basically is just moving the start of the counting from 00:00 to 12:00 while keeping it 12h-like. It's not that confusing in theory. But if course it wasn't a serious suggestion because of the practical limitations.

12h time format and driving on the left side are the standards in my country. I'm absolutely comfortable with the 12h format when used correctly. On the other hand, I'm uncomfortable with driving on either side of the road.
