Doctor Who?

Post by mangaluva »

Because i'm not sure if there's already a thread for this show, and there should be. It has to be one of the most emotional, innovative, intelligent and well-written sci-fi dramas EVER, with viewing figures as high as 13.3 million. Since it's on the BBC, though, those who live outwith the UK or who live under a rock may not know what it is. Allow me to enlighten you. (fans can skip the spoiler tab.)
Spoiler:
Doctor Who follows an alien known only as The Doctor, from a near-extinct species known as the Time Lords. He looks human, though whenever this is pointed out he responds "No, you look Time Lord, we were here first". He travels time and space in his ship called the Tardis= Time And Relative Dimensions In Space- which looks like an old British Police Box, though it's much bigger on the inside. Apparently the Tardis is meant to look like whatever would blend in locally, but in 1960's London the circuit crashed and the Doctor never fixed it because he liked it. The Doctor is a quirky character who is fond of humans, and prefers non-violent solutions. He often has companions travelling with him, these days almost exclusively women, because he's kinda lonely- his entire race is as good as extinct, trapped outside of time and space with their enemies, the Daleks, as a result of the horrific Time War which threatened to tear the universe itself apart. The only Time Lords to escape were the Doctor and his best-friend-mortal-enemy-WTF, an insane Time Lord known as The Master. No matter what's going wrong, whenever The Doctor gets involved, things get fixed, people survive, and frequently the earth is saved. This is rarely without cost, something that upsets him.

There are several recurring enemies among humans and aliens, but the Doctor’s worst enemies are the remnants of the Daleks, who return no matter how often he thinks he’s killed them off. The Daleks are vaguely squidlike creatures who live in robotic shells that recently became able to levitate, negating humanity’s one advantage against them- staircases. They have been genetically modified to feel nothing but anger and hatred towards anything that is not a Dalek- “inferior racesâ€

*glomps mangaluva for starting this thread*

Haven't see the newest episode yet. I live in America and all the easy sites (youtube, dailymotion, etc) are suddenly being Nazis about Doctor Who...people's accounts are getting suspended left and right.  :'(

I've only seen a few episode since I live in the US, but I love it anyway.  Episodes are really hard to find.  o.o

It's because it all belongs to the BBC, and for obvious reasons they don't broadcast outside of the UK. Which is evil of them, because it is wonderful and deserves to be shared with the world DX

Spoiler:
Angel coming out of the screen
was kinda creepy, but that's to be expected from the Weeping Angels.

I don't think SciFi has the new season yet...just, sometimes, they'll have a marathon of older NewWho episodes, and I think it comes on late on Thursdays, too. As far as I know, BBC America is the only station airing Series 5 here. (And I don't have it.)  >:(

So it does broadcast outside the UK! I thought it didn't, since the new episodes are broadcast on the BBC. They're not known for sharing :P

Yeah, but it airs on BBC first, so some people just download the BCC recordings.

this is what I do, it usually pops up a few hours after it airs in the UK so it's all good for me.

Anyway, new episode was awesome. This is Bob, sir...

Also, there's some speculation that:
Spoiler:
River Song isn't just some random prisoner (which it was somewhat referred to by the Cleric or whatever his rank was), but rather a con artist who just dupes the doctor into thinking she's someone important to him, because due to the wonders of time travel he basically has to take her word for it. So eventually he'll probably find out, but he may still have to go along with it to make sure that the events in the Library still happen.
which I dunno if I quite believe it entirely but it's pretty interesting.

Sacred Bob. What an awesome name ;D

Interesting theory on River Song, but when she first turned up it DID transpire that she knows the Doctor's true name, and she had the Sonic Screwdriver and was willing to die for him. I think she's important. My current favourite theory is that, rather than being his wife, she's actually
Spoiler:
Jenny
. She reminds me of her, and the priest did say "who and what you are", implying she's not human.

I wonder if and how they'll manage to kill the Angels. I think you should just take a sledgehammer to the statues while staring at them, but that's just me XDXD

her knowledge and the screwdriver could also be things she learns before the doctor finds out who she is also, or perhaps that he gives them to her just for fulfillment of the timeline. But either way, it's too early to tell, so who knows :O

That's the fun part about time travellers. Such a messed up personal timeline. Anybody else feel like there's something a bit "The Time Traveller's Wife" about it? XDXD
