Millions of dollars in maple syrup stolen
[quote]Talk about sticky-fingered thieves. They've struck in Quebec, snatching millions of dollars worth of maple syrup from a warehouse in Saint-Louis-de-Blandford, between Montreal and Quebec City.

Up to 10 million pounds of syrup was in the warehouse, according to a statement from the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, which bills itself as keeper of  the global strategic maple syrup reserve.

Officials could not say exactly how much of the product was stolen, but a Quebec police official told The Globe and Mail it was a substantial quantity.

“We know that it’s millions of dollars that was stolen,â€

that'll help, but even if she has plenty of moose, what's she supposed to drink if there's no syrup?

Water, juice, and milk? Or for that matter, soda. It's not like the corn syrup disappeared. :P

corn syrup is for people in the US

do you really think a Canadian could survive on something other than maple syrup?

This is really one hell of a heist - removing the barrel contents systematically means it was well organized, possibly with insider help. Tanker trucks are 20,000 to 30,000 Liters and we are talking about 10 million pounds at 11 pounds per gallon which is ~3,400,000 L or 115 Large tanker trucks of stuff. (The amount stolen could be less than this according to the news, but it gives you an idea of the magnitude and the transport requirements for the thieves.) I would definitely check everyone who is and had been working for the place in the last decade.

I wonder how long the thefts had been going on? The stolen product could already be leaking into the market if it has been going on a while, and if the thieves were smart they would have been trickling it out onto the market over time to avoid suspicious surges. I wonder if each of the known good suppliers could introduce a trace non-toxic add in (or specific mix) along with auditing their production and processing so thieves can't easily add the stolen product to the market? Most maple syrup I am guessing comes from Canada and the US, so I imagine that this would be not unfeasible because no supplier on either side of the US-Can border wants to be flooded by stolen syrup.

Rather than being sold in the US or Canada it may go overseas, possibly to Japan interestingly enough. Ripping from Wikipedia: "Japan is a large importer of maple syrup: in 2010, 10.1 percent of Canada's maple syrup exports (a value of C$28 million) went to Japan. However, in South Korea in particular, it is traditional to consume maple sap, called gorosoe, instead of processing it into syrup."

Of course, maple syrup might not be only good for maple syrup. If it starts to look hot, the thieves might be able to sell it to an unscrupulous foreign chemical or food processing firm for less than market value for other purposes.

More like tries to prove it wasn't maple syrup, but rather some sort of congealed apple cider.

Also, fixed it for you.
