Random Poll of the Day! (790)

Yeah, I know it's not an actual dilemma for non-song writers (hence this isn't a real dilemma for me either). I do have this argument with some people every once in a while.
I'd go with the second option, mainly because I care more about the music than the lyrics.

Definitely the latter. Lyrics are nothing if they aren't on top of a good melody, and usually the best way to get that is to have the melody in place first it seems. I'm not a songwriter, but that seems to mostly be the case when you see behind the scenes footage with successful artists.

When I was writing my hit song "Midnight Train To Georgia" I found that writing the music first and then the lyrics made things easier

I'd first write the lyrics
and then dump the music writing to someone else *likes writing*

What they said. I don't know enough about music to write it.

but its interesting that i read somewhere that classical composers such as Chopin used to come up with a harmony scheme before the melody, i find that somehow hard to believe.
Harmony is completely different from lyrics, so it doesn't have much to do with this poll.
But I don't understand why it's hard for you to believe. It makes perfect sense for me that some classical composers cared first for their harmony than their melody.

First option. Lyrics are most of the reason I listen to a lot of the songs I listen to.

Option 1. The only reason I can think of, is that it seems easier to write the lyrics first.

Music first. In a lot of the music I listen to, the vocals are just another instrument, and whatever the actual lyrics are is relatively unimportant.

Music first, lyrics after except in very specific genres of music (like sung poetry).

Lyrics have always been the important thing to me.

That depends, do you have something you want to get "out there" of course lyrics first
But I choose music first, since I'm way better with music than with words

The later as some of the greatest music ever writen never got lyrics and that the way I like my music - Instrumental. That might be one reason why I love classical music from Beethoven, Pachelbel, Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Strauss.
Please enjoy some of it
