Hopefully I gave a room for enough options (though option 1 is probably extremely rare with people).

I used to give most new anime 2-3 episodes, then as seasons went by I lowered it to 1 episode. Now it's either the first 5-10 minutes or just judging according to the OP. I know it's too demanding to expect a new anime to lure me in in the first 10 minutes, but.....I'll go on with that anyway.

This seems ridiculously strict.  I give three episodes, maybe a fourth or fifth if I'm really on the edge of dropping it or not.  I think I've only stopped a series after 5 minute once, when I almost fell asleep during those first few minutes, which was the first and only time I've ever done so.  I knew from that it just wasn't going to cut it at all.

I'd also like to point out that if you didn't give it three episodes, Madoka would seem like a generic, run of the mill magical girl anime. 

Could there be a "None of the Above" or "It varies" option?

honestly, it comes down to the first option a lot of the time. I only ever really drop a series if it comes close to bringing me physical pain to press the "play video" button due to how bad/boring I know it's going to be.

If I like the first episode, I keep going and usually finish no matter what. If I'm meh about or downright hate the first episode, I usually go online and see if people say it gets better or not and decide from there.

I have dropped series in the middle (Guilty Crown, I'm looking at you), but it's unusual.

That's because I've become a bit impatient with new anime, and that's because as seasons go by, I find most of the new anime not interesting enough (when I still gave them a couple of episodes), and since I began studying and practicing more this year, I needed to know well that what I was going to waste my time on is going to be something I'll enjoy and not something that I might or might not enjoy watching. I know it's ridiculously strict. Perhaps I'll be less demanding during the summer season.

I know that. That was when I gave a series only one episode, and I actually did give up on it following that. I only got back to Madoka during the middle of the season after I heard so much good feedback about it and got the feeling that I'm missing on something. I don't agree, though, with the latter part of your post since even the first episode doesn't give you a generic magical girl vibe.

If you only gave Highschool DxD one episode (since it was a very ecchi show), I'd suggest giving it through episode 5 (end of first arc).  It's surprisingly good, probably the best or one of the best shows of last season (which really ended up surprising me).

5-10 minutes of the first episode.  Since I rarely watch any anime I'm unfamiliar with prior to starting it, that's not so bad.

Last option.

At least the 2nd option, If not, at least a quarter of the series depending on the length
