I occasionally shut my laptop down to allow it to install updates, but I prefer to let it sleep when I'm not using it because my tech told me that leaving it on is better for the battery than switching it off and on, and since my laptop's battery is pretty crap anyway...

Yes, because it consumes less energy and, assuming you aren't going to turn it back on within 30 minutes or so, is better on the wear and tear of the components inside the machine.

For the most part, no, I just put it on sleep or hibernate especially if I've got certain tabs up 'cause it doesn't always fullly restore them

I always put my computer on hibernating and plug it off when I'm finished
So, as far as power consumption is concerned, I do. As far as shutting down the OS is concerned, (almost) never
