Don't understimate Ghana!
Besides, You got here with a goal in the last minute and tied with England due to Green black magic. Overall, you showed determination, but got results in a way you didn't plan.

Well, that ensures that soccer will be irrelevant in the US sports sphere for another four years.

One problem is that the rules in soccer are really... illogical. In every other major sport, to prevent abuse, we stop the clock when the ball is no longer in play. I'm sure soccer has some sort of justification for this--except that, if you watched today's game, you can see how easy it is to exploit it. Adding on 3 minutes of extra time means absolutely nothing when the other team has exploited their lead and wasted 7+ minutes beforehand by feigning injury. We lost 3 minutes while they carted out a stretcher for a guy not once, but twice, in extra time alone. There's no chance to gain any momentum and the exciting moments are few and far between as a result.

American sports fans just aren't open to rules that are so easily exploited for direct gain. If it were up to me, you would stop the clock when the ball is out or a foul is called. You start the clock again when the ball is in play; rinse, repeat. The games will take a bit longer, but as a result, you get something that resembles an actual sports competition and not an insurance scam. If you play it this way, no one needs to add additional time for 'injuries' that are capped out at 3 minutes--instead, when it comes to 90 minutes and one team is in the lead, the game's over. If the Ghana players were as injured as they were acting, they would need to start pulling people from the crowd to have anybody left to start their next game.

I'd love for soccer to become a bigger sport here, but it's rules like this that ensure it's not about to be the case anytime soon. And as a result, the US teams are really never going to be anything special simply because our athletes with talent are too busy playing sports that are more competitive locally and more fiscally fruitful. Until soccer has real stars domestically and has consistency with them (as in, fewer 'loans' of players to international teams), kids will never have any motivation to choose it over basketball, baseball, football, or even hockey.
