Let's make this topic for all Holmes fans to discuss about the almighty detective Sherlock Holmes and his creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle...^^

And of course for everyone who wants to know something about holmes, eventhough actualy every DC fan should know something about Holmes, in my opion ;)..........

Let's begin by discussing the methods Holmes used to solve a case......

Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.
Now that's a great axiom.

Like Conan, he says that the observation of anything peculiar, no matter how seemingly insignificant, is crucial to solving a case

But in general, he is an expert at extrapolating from evidence left behind at a crime scene (footprints, clay/dirt, cigar ash, etc) to create a profile of the criminal: where he has been, how tall he is, is he a man/woman, etc
With this and the facts and impressions given by people concerned with the case Holmes often investigates further to confirm his deductions

"I play the game for the game's own sake." (From BRUC)

Absolute favorite Holmes quote. Not the usual take, but the most meaningful to me. I also quote it every time people ask why I still fansub :P.

''At present I am, as you know, fairly busy, but I propose to devote my declining years to the composition of a textbook which shall focus the whole art of deduction into one volume. '' ( quoted from ABBE ( for does who don't know, ABBE stands for ''The Adventure of the Abbey Grange'' ) )

Shouldn't it be wonderfull if this textbook was real ;D.... I mean, a book like that would explain to every living person how to learn and master ( in a mortal way..^^ ) the art of deduction.
Even if it was expansive, I would still purchase it... a book like that, is probably like a ''bible'' for every sherlockian XD....
But unfortunaly, Holmes is fake, so this ''holy book of deduction'' is fake too.... :'(

So if you wanna master the art of deduction, only option left, is to study every Holmes story ( and try to solve a case faster then Shinichi does..hehe... , and ofcourse study a lott of DC episodes... ;D )

Still hoping/waiting for this book, eventough that I know that it will never come out........ :D

I own a leather bound, gilded paged, Sherlock collection of every word ever written about him by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I used to carry it around with me at school and read it whenever I had free time or was bored with class.. People used to think it was a bible and I would tell them, "It is to me :-P"

By the way, speaking of Sherlock Holmes, does anyone know of the British tv shows of the canonical sherlock holmes's story.
Can you at least give the name of actors.
At least a study in scarlet.

I discussed the various series briefly in that post and a few previous ones.

The only names you really need to know: Jeremy Brett as Holmes, and David Burke & Edward Hardwicke as Watson. They were in the Granada adaptations, which are, quite frankly, the only adaptations worth bothering with.

As for A Study in Scarlet specifically, there's never been a completely faithful adaptation (filmed, that is). Peter O'Toole was the voice of Holmes in a series of animated 'movies' that ran just under an hour, from way, way back. These were insanely faithful and covered the four novels, so if you ever see them, may wanna pick em up.

Hmm... that may be an amazing quote and all...
but I am quite fond of this quote from "The Sign of the Four":

"'Simple!' I ejaculated."

obviously the common usage of that word has changed, and would probably be closest to exclaimed, and also Doyle does use that in the same manner every so often -- just shows you how much language changes in 200 years
