Re: What's on your mind?
Elections post #3
A term of the Israeli PM as well as the parliament (Knesset) is theoretically supposed to be 4 years, and then head to elections. However, for 67 years, this only happened twice. Governance is so flimsy here due to the system, thus we always seem to get new elections ahead of time. This is again one of those cases. Our last elections only occurred 2 years ago. So how did this happen?
Long story short, while Netanyahu (in charge of Likud) had the biggest party after the last elections, he was forced to create a very uncomfortable government (for him) by Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid's leader). While it held okay for the first year, inner conflicts began to occur, so back in late November, Netanyahu fired Lapid and Livni from his government, and then the two took out their parties out of the coalition (Yesh Atid party and the Tnuah party). This left Netanyahu with a coalition of below 61 seats in the parliament (there are overall 120 seats), so obviously there was no choice and everyone (including Netanyahu) called for the Knesset to be dissolved and go to new elections.
Netanyahu could have had 2 more years as prime minister, but instead of trying to resolve the conflicts in his government, he chose to go for elections. Most likely because he thought there was no political rival/party that was threatening him and no one who could get enough votes to counter him. At the time, he was probably right, now however, he might be starting to regret his decision to go for elections...

Re: What's on your mind?
Elections post #4
So... I'm just gonna go through some of the major events that happened to (almost) every party here in the last few months.
The Zionist Union (center left party)
A few months ago, no one thought someone could be a real challenge for Netanyahu. Even the Likud's biggest enemy (Labor) was only third in power in the last term, and no one thought its uncharismatic leader (Isaac Herzog) could make it rise (polls predicted at best 14 seats for the party). So what happened? The Labor and Tzipi Livni's party (Hatnuah - had 6 seats) merged together to form the Zionist Union. However, Livni's conditions were that if she and Herzog win, they'd have a rotation in the job of the prime minister (first two years Herzog, and then two years Livni). Herzog agreed, and the media bashed him for days. However, the merger was exactly the thing that needed to happen. Opinion polls started to predict rise of up to 22 seats for the Zionist Union, which began to rival Likud (that received similar results).
The party's campaign was a bit iffy in the beginning, but it got better, and everyone has had time to get used to the idea of the rotation, so no one minds it anymore. Now (mere days before elections) all the opinion polls predict for the party to get 24-26 seats (3-4 more than what's predicted for Netanyahu). So overall, Herzog managed to climb up to the top (whether that will truly be the end result remains to be seen).
Yesh Atid (center party)
Not much to say here. Yair Lapid managed to be the surprise of the last elections, gaining 19 seats and having the second biggest party in the Knesset. But Lapid was dumb enough to enter Likud's government and accept the job of the minister of finance (the most unpopular job), which is exactly what Netanyahu wanted. After 2 years, everyone hated Lapid because he had to raise taxes. So when the current elections were announced, Lapid's popularity was at the bottom of the barrel (only 8 seats predicted). However, he seemed to have managed to do an excellent campaign, it's predicted he can get up to 14 seats and maybe get to have the 3rd biggest party in the Knesset.
Enough for today.
