but DC has pretty shallow Character development.
But fun characters nonetheless. Besides, it has even less plot (and the little plot it has sucks for the most part).

I think the plot for DC is great is actually, it's really the main reason why I continued watching for the later parts of the anime series.  What bugs me is the 0 character development.  Ran is still the same Ran we saw in the beginning.  One can argue Shinichi has changed to be less cocky, but he's still damn cocky.

Ai's the only one with some development, but her development has kinda simmered to a babysitter role.

Concerning character development, the sad part for me is that Gosho can manage it...and it is clear at times that he could do it very well.

For instance, the Moonlight Sonata case and the case where Akemi was killed. Those two moments were ones of extreme weakness for Shinichi and if DC weren't the long runner it is and the development continued on a path, Shinichi would have had a pretty solid development with those two cases. Heck, when he referenced Moonlight Sonata in that case with Heiji, it kind of blindsided me that he'd actually remember that...and feel the way he did about it.

...Unfortunately, those moments were eons ago. Hence why it's only clues towards Gosho's potential for the stuff rather than being the skill itself.

The only change I can see in Ran is that she got a lot less strict and lost some karate-comedy as time went on. Remember when she would punch desks because no one was listening to her?

I completely disagree with you. I actually like the plot of DC, even if it moves too slowly.

For some reason, I read that sentence as "the Moonlight Sonata case where Akemi was killed." the first time.  I was quite confused until I realized I missed a couple words in there. :-X

I might wake up early and go running. I also might wake up and win the lottery. The odds are about the same.

I read things for the plot. Sometimes, plots are recycled, like having similar type of movement (goes out and kills dragon, then comes back for reward), climax (the guy kills the dragon, he gets the princess as his reward), etc. In these case, I think the character makes the plot move better and differently than previous stories with similar plot. Kind of like reading shojo romance manga. Even if the world is destroyed except all the world's collection of shojo romance manga, I would only read the ones that are actually different from the rest by plot (or by character which makes the plot run a little differently). The rest of those manga can be my fire starter.
