I'm with abs on this one.

While music is both entertaining and beautiful and all that, you realize it more because you're not always listening to music. On the other hand, you're almost always looking at the world, so you don't really realize how much you need it. Of course, I'm putting words in your mouth by saying "you" here, but you know what I mean.

Not to mention, deafness is much more easily prosthetic'd back than sight (which doesn't even have any decent solutions atm, afaik), but for the basis of this being a hypothetical question, that's really not worth mentioning much.

Well, I guess it mostly depends on whether we're talking about being born one of these things or developing it for whatever reason later in life.

If it's a case of being born this way: I would choose deaf over blind. Because I wouldn't know what it's like to hear anyway, so even though I would be missing out, I would realize it half as much as if I had experienced hearing and then lost it. And being born blind would mean that even though I can hear what's going on around me, I would never be able to see what's happening, and I wouldn't even know where to begin with imagining what it looks like.

In the case of going deaf/blind later in life: I would choose blind, because by that point I would mostly be able to paint a mental picture of what's going on even if it's not exactly right. And the point I made before about giving up music is a big argument against going deaf later in life versus blind.

It's odd how I use almost the exact same argument to justify choosing blindness over deafness. When I imagine loosing my sight, I think of things like star-gazing, photography or reading a book. In other words, things that I've consciously chosen to take note of. When I think about loosing my hearing, I think of the loss of white noise - a fan working, cars outside, rain falling, a train going past, people talking, etc, etc.

Maybe I perceive the world in a more auditory fashion? Hmmm. Now I'm wondering what sort of research has been done on this subject....

Of course, adjusting to deafness might be easier than adjusting to blindness, though I hope I'll never have to find out either way.

Being blind will cut you out from things.
While being deaf cuts you of from humans.

That's something my teacher/prof said and she's also teaching deaf kids D:
And it's true. Deaf people have problems with communicating with "normal people". Because if you're deaf since childhood, you can't speak well. And You need to be able to read the lips from people. And that's hard if that person doesn't speak well or isn't looking at you etc.
So, saying something to a person and understanding that person is hard.

While you're blind, you can't interact with all thing anymore. But you can still talk normally with people (well, you wouldn't be able to chat anymore I guess D:)

So I voted for mute. Because you can interact with things and understand people what they say. The problem is just that the other understands what you want to "say". But that can be solved easily with pen and paper or a cellphone. (easier than being deaf)

Mute I could live with, I don't talk that much anyway. But if I was blind I couldn't read or play Tetris, and if I was deaf I couldn't listen to music

it was a hypothetical, I don't think phoenixtears is actually made of lava. But some people are, and it's a serious problem that should not be joked about.
