Magic Kaito Special Comparison and Caps (Image Heavy)

Now that the first chapter of Magic Kaito has been animated I thought it'd be interesting to compare what is the same and what is different between the original and the TV version.

Oh, my, that was awesome!
There is just too much adrenaline in the chapter.
What I noticed, is that Kaito doesn't look that much to Shinichi, as he seemed in earlier appearences. And even though in the episode in which Kaito meets Yukiko he is very similar to a young Shinichi with messy hair, he is lots different from that image here.
In addition, I got the impression they seemed older than Shinichi and Ran, while talking about phisical appearence. On the contrary of what Kaito jokes about (Aoko's underdevelopment of curves), I found her much more defined than Ran. I don't know, I might be hallucinating.
And what? he owns a crane or what? haha hilarious.
It's just me or the music just make you nervous?

Well, all in. LOVED IT! It give us a new perspective of the characters, doesn't it? Oh well, I'll just keep writing on my fanfics he looks exactly like Shinichi hahaha

I think this might be because of the animation director's influence on the appearance of this special. The early appearances of Kaito and Shinichi in their respective mangas do resemble eachother quite a bit, as does Aoko and Ran's appearances. It's possible DC's story (particularly the one you mentioned) is trying to emphasize Kaito and Shinichi similar appearances for a plot point, especially in the movies. In movie 8 Conan discovered Kid doesn't need a mask to disguise as Shinichi, so I think this will come back in movie 14. (But I suppose we'll have to wait to see it!)

Kaito and Aoko are second year high school students just as Shinichi and Ran, although again, the reason they may look older to you is probably the animation director's influence.

The crane...your guess is as good as mine. If Toichi could store a car inside the secret room of the Kuroba household I see no reason why Kaito doesn't have a crane to mess around with. xD;;

The music was a nice switch from Katsuo Ono's score, using a musician named Atsushi Umebori. Didn't make me nervous, but again, it was a very nice change from the usual music we get in DC.

The rare thing is that KID looks lots more like the Kaito that appears on DC, doesn't him? Anyway, I don't think that the fact that KID can disguise himself as Shinichi and in consequence they are very similar is something that could not happen in the series. I mean, he hadn't done it yet, but I think it has to do more with the fact that Aoyama already used the trick more than the posibility that they look alike is a just a characteristic from the movies(like KID knows Conan's identity). However, you're right. We have no further evidence, so will have to wait.

Yeah, I knew they were the same age. It definitely has to do with the animation director's influence. It just, it was weird.

The music was nice, and definitely a change from Dc's, but I don't know if I really like it, just not accustomed to it.

Also, on a note where you were considering possible names for Kaito's mom, you mentioned Chikage and Midori. My guess would be Midori, based on the fact that all of the MK characters have a colour somewhere in their name (Aoko=Blue, Ginzo=Silver, Hakuba=White, Akako=Red, etc...)

I'm gibbering too happily to say more about this than WANT TO SEE! WANT TO SEE NOW!

I hope they'll continue it, and I'm glad that they changed the style a little:3
This way it really looks like his own Anime and not a copy of DC x3

The chase between the police and Kaitou Kid (Jii) has been elaborated upon and includes the introduction of Inspector Nakamori. Nice touch, considering this chase only lasted the first page in the manga. O_o;;

Yup. Kaito's still a perv. Nice handstand there. _{Ah, it's so strange seeing Kaito act like this again in comparison to his cool demeanor in the Conan series. It's rather refreshing.}

The infamous mop-chase scene has been elaborated upon and altered towards the end. In the original version, after disguising a fellow classmate and tricking Aoko, Kaito charms his teacher by kissing her hand and disappears while Aoko is fuming. In this version after disguising the classmate...Kaito pretends to be an alien and leaps out the window to an odd octopus shaped balloon suspended by a crane. Aoko follows him. ...Don't look at me like that, I'm serious. xD;; Apparently the trick Kaito had planned with this device didn't go quite to plan. Oddly this is important later.

Here's where a portion of the story diverts. In the TV version, Kaito's mother (who now finally has a name that unfortunately I don't know the reading of... (Chikage? Midori...?)) is away from home in Las Vegas and has a scene where she talks to Kaito via webcam. (Yeah, they definitely upped the date of the original story...) Her character design has changed somewhat, mainly her hairstyle. The manga's was straight but with the family's trade-marked spikiness/messiness at the top; it's a lot neater in the anime. Character design aside, this scene is important. In the manga, it's apparent Kaito's mother has a hunch that Kaito discovered Toichi's little secret when she hears the panel downstairs while talking with Aoko about Kaito's weakness (fish). Since this version doesn't have her in the house though, I guess we're to assume she has no clue about her son's soon-to-be-quite-dangerous secret. Which...really, makes a lot of sense. What mother in their right mind allows their son to go avenging his father searching for a gem being sought after by an organization with guns?

At any rate, Kaito remembers a magic show performed by Toichi he and Aoko attended (with Jii present at the show, unlike the manga) and Toichi telling him about using a poker face, leans on Toichi's portrait, and stumbles into...

...James Bond's secret lair, apparently. (I had to go back and look, but yes, the car WAS in the manga. O_o;; ) The room seems a lot bigger here than in the manga, but this could be from the strange perspective the original panel was in.

Kaito discovers Toichi's Kid outfit and puts it on. (After being scared witless by the monocle popping out of the top hat, complete with confetti. Way to startle your son there, Toichi.)

The chase between the police, Jii, and Kaito is elaborated upon as expected. The major difference here is Kaito's escape after covering for Jii. Kaito gets his magic trick with the crane from earlier in the program right this around and manages to escape the police undetected.

The scene with Kaito and Aoko with the fish of doom takes place outside instead of in school now. Kaito's freakout here causes him to start using the card gun, shooting wildly at the fish and Aoko. Hah...so strange to finally see an "OMGFISHRUN!!" scene with Kaito.

I watched it- without subs, so I didn't know exactly what people were saying, but I've only read the chapter A MILLION TIMES so I could generally guess. It was awesome, awesome, AWESOME. But am I the only one who thinks the artwork was a touch weird around guys' hips? I mean, they frequently looked like they had quite wide, feminine hips. Was that just me?

Oh, and another difference from the manga is that Kaito actually gets angry at his mother because she's going around lavishly spending the money they have...

But when I first saw the KID room, I was really wondering how they never noticed there was a huge area of the house occupied by this giant block of matter...

I fangasmed. It was wonderful. I love how they made the animation and reactions slightly different from DC. It was really refreshing.
