as he said, it is harder to create art (artful thieving) than to seek flaws in it (detective)...
Yuusaku does that with his many mystery books with the night baron too.
But ayw is right; each of the character brings something to the show and make it wonderful.

In terms of deductions, Yuusaku;
In terms of trickery, Kid;
In science knowledge, Ai;
In gadgetry, Agasa Hakase (but he's not on the list);
In terms of resolving dangerous situations, Conan;
In terms of smartness combined with sheer coolness, Akai;
and in terms of smartness combined with fun, Heiji.
yes, he is. Agasa Hakase is on the list, but, his name is Hirochi Agasa
to see who's the smartest, they should all be in the same place where a murder was committed and whoever solved it first without consulting the others would be the smartest... oh, that's impossible...
No, I don't agree Shinichi's daddy is the smartest.
Holy... he's just a fiction writer who happened to solve some cases related to his fic.

Agree.
Shinichi seems to be the smartest, however, a FBI "gunner" like Shuichi Akai or detective Hakuba is a tight match!
If they're really that smart, why can't they catch KID? I know they can solve his tricks but why not plan a capture for the most notorious and elusive thief? KID is always caught in the act of doing tricks (mostly by Conan) but he can always find a way to escape. Most of them who chase KID cannot anticipate what he'll do next.
Spoiler:
For example: in Kaitou KID's Teleportation Magic, Conan didn't even think that he can use his hanglider while in the middle of the string pulley. Even Kudou Shin'ichi said "This guy is smarter than I thought" on ep 219.
