Cell shading vs soft cell shading

Post by Kleene Onigiri »

Was curious what people like better.

Cell shading:
Used in animes. Yuri Iwamoto art is tending towards that too. (Keyhole art).
Basically it doesn't have much "gradients"

Soft cell shading/ Soft shading:
Kirite's art would be an example. Sonoci's art would also count more towards that.

Examples: http://kuroinekosan.deviantart.com/art/ ... -309247629

There is also a mixed version. But which one would you choose from those? :D

This is actually really hard to call. Personally (and this is just the two cents of someone with no artistic talent at all :P) I feel like cell shading is more dynamic, and thus better for active pieces like comics and anime, but for single pieces of artwork I think soft shading is quite beautiful.

probly cell shading with soft edges (not to be confused with the soft shading example in the OP)

also depends on the art though imo, if it's something with heavy/sharp lines, soft shading wouldn't look as good, but things with more curves/lighter lines can use softer shading.

It's hard since I think they both have their place.  Depending on the art style one might look better than the other.  However, I think in general soft shading looks better.

I have no personal pref to any style of drawing and colouring.  As long as it follows the correct light source and looks good :D.  I'm usually pretty soft but that's because I don't have the patience and skill to do awesome folds and clean lines orz.  Not to say soft style doesn't have clean lines and awesome folds (it's just me otl)

I love doubleleaf's cellshade it's fantastic and detailed and asdfasdf (warning: gallery is full of fangirl nosebleed inducing material, this is safe though)

Soft style with awesome edges and folds by iwaisan

Both style has weakness if not done right.  A good artist can work all I think c:

That's true :D
People also tend to go for cell shading when drawing chibis :)

I think that's the "mixed version" you mean :D
Where you go with a cell shading and then just add some "smoothness" to some edges.

But I though people would vote that mostly when I put it into the vote too :x XD

I prefer a mix
but it's hard to not just make it soft shading or to make it look good...

I have a huge bias towards beautifully done soft shading :x. Cell shading can be good in some circumstances though.
