The Detective Boys weren't even around when Conan, of all people, ruined their moment in the Hammerman case.  (He still made up for it here.)

I guess Gosho decided he couldn't drag things out forever and now was a good time to make this step.  Shinichi/Ran may be locked in status quo out of necessity but that doesn't mean he can't allow the secondary characters to actually have an active romantic subplot.

It could mean that something bad is around the corner, though.
