Finally, after over 750 chapters...

Post by HiddenDetective »

another case of suicide in the original manga (not counting any anime original episode)... If memory serves me correct, the only suicide case before ch 795 here was the third case in the series, where they investigate the death of Yoko's boyfriend, and conclude that he committed suicide by jumping backwards onto a knife stuck in a block of ice on the floor...

Oh good, I'm not the only one who thought "Finally! It actually wasn't murder for once!"
I honestly don't remember any suicide cases other than the third case either.

even in AO there were never sucide cases and I am actually happy with that as this case is indeed quite original.

Now all we need is an accidental death solution.

Conan as Kogoro: "It's quite simple, really. The late Fujiwara-san simply wasn't watching where he was going, and slipped on the chicken gizzard that had carelessly been left on the floor. Fujiwara then fell foreward, impaling his chin on the meathook. He tried desperately to free himself, but it just wasn't this fellow's day. In his painful flailing, his right hand accidentally pressed the button that activated the nearby splitting saw. In his state of pain and hysteria, Fujiwara's right sleeve became caught in the path of the saw's unforgiving steel teeth, dragging his hand and arm quickly towards it, and that's how Fujiwara Atsuo-san met his bloody end."

Someone go find Gosho because I want this to happen and I want it to happen right now.

Couldn't say.. :D

@Coon: Last time I checked, he doesn't do fan suggestions. Would be a nice change of pace, though.

I still feel that the suicide option isn't really fair for the reader. It was okay with the Yoko case since that was at the very beginning, but I think Gosho should have stuck to the murders.

I think this particular suicide was fair. There was a clear motive that the reader could figure out fairly early on. Once the reader put together that they were brother and sister and that Banba didn't do it (which there were more than enough clues to do), suicide was a pretty obvious option. I didn't feel cheated by it or anything.

I'm not really talking about this case specifically but more about the suicide option in general. I feel that the point of a detective series is that there is one or more murders and that the reader has to find the culprit(s) or prove that the unique suspect is indeed the culprit (that implies that there is always at least one culprit). In that regard the suicide option always feels like the easy way out.

i also think that generally it should be murders -- classic whodunnits right? who, where and with what weapon. :p but I don't mind Gosho mixing it up like this as long as it's rare.

and yes to the accidental death suggestion haha!

In the case of suicide the victim is the culprit. And part of detective work is clearing people of suspicion. As long as we're given clues that can lead to figuring out it's suicide, I don't feel like it's "cheating" the reader. I definitely think it's okay to mix it up once in a while. I was getting really tired of the standard formula and wanted this to be a suicide anyway. So I'll have to disagree with you about it always having to be murder.

No, you weren't. :)

Something like this really needs to happen! XD
