The skateboard pops up in almost every movie, which is probably why you feel it's used often. It also pops up in numerous anime cases, but has only actually appeared in the manga twice (that was what I ment earlier). Off the top of my head, it's not in movies 6 (no gadgets, VR London), 8 (chases KID with the paraglider-thingy and then they're on a plane), or 9. (9 takes place on a boat). All the other movies have skateboard scenes. Some of them involving cool tricks or Conan flying. (4 and 5 come to mind immediately.)yukionna wrote: I thought the skateboard was used often enough. The suspenders were kinda "meh...".
Yeah. I only started reading the manga recently (since episode 335 came out). But I wish they used the skateboard more often in the manga... But perhaps Conan's skateboarding doesn't look as cool in the manga as it does animated... Conan totally beats pro-skateboarders with his mad skills.miakakiri wrote:The skateboard pops up in almost every movie, which is probably why you feel it's used often. And yes, now that you mention it, I remember the suspenders being used in the "Tenth Passenger" case (AO, I think it was about 201-202?) I thought they'd popped up in an AO or two, but I couldn't recall for certain. They really aren't all that useful, huh? I don't think they're even mentioned in the "Intro to the Gadgets" sequence of any movie other than movie 2 (and that uses footage of the case where they first appeared--the only time they'd been used at that point).
Lunch box fax is probably dead, was a weird invention to being with. Having a portable fax was a good idea, but disguising as a lunchbox? That kinda defeats the purpose of having it hidden.Kyrus wrote: What I really want to know is what happened to that lunchbox fax machine Conan had! (I wonder if Gosho honestly thought he'd have any use for that one in later cases)
I can't really blame Gosho with sticking with what works, but it does make me kind of sad to see Conan only use the same few gadgets all the time(two of which we're so used to that we hardly notice when he uses them). Having Agasa come out with some weird new inflatable soccer ball belt/cell phone earring(gotta love the parts of the series that technological advancement hit hard)/POWER SUSPENDERS/detective boy badges/solar powered skateboard/bulletproof(okay, that part might have just been for movie 3) radar glasses every once in a while was a big part of the charm in the earlier parts of the series.
Especially when we got a dud like the suspenders, which were useful for about one case before Gosho realized that Conan doesn't need extra lifting power very often. Who needs the BO when we could make Detective Conan into Agasa's Failed Invention of the Day?
How could you forget the awesome soccer ball belt. When it first was introduced I agreed with Haibara & Conan that it was stupid..but now it's like "how did Conan function without that belt?"miakakiri wrote: His suspenders apparently turned out to be not all that cool/useful. We've seen them all of about twice--the case where he first gets them, and movie 2. (I think. There might be more, but none that I can remember off the top of my head.)
The skateboard is in every movie and a number of anime cases (iirc) but only shows up in 2 manga cases--it's first appearance in the case where Ayumi is "kidnapped" and more recently in a case where Hakase's car breaks down (listed on the manga site as "A Dangerous Pair").
Both items still exist, they just don't get much use. There are only about four gadgets that really see regular use: glasses, badge, bow tie, and shoes.
