Kaito and Shinichi's same looks and voice (except the hair) is still a big question for me

What might be their connection? Beside that Kaito's father is Yukiko's mentor, what is the reason for them to look similar? Also Aoyama sensei said on one of his interviews that there are hidden reason behind it. What is it?

Aoyama Gosho can't draw enough distinctive faces. Shinichi, Heiji, Kaito Kid and Hakuba all look the same.
