I actually have my suspicions that Gosho might want this series to end up like that story which never received an appropriate end because the author died from old age(leaving the two lovers apart). It's been referenced in DC a few times so it might be a hint.

If you ask me, the end is close...the pairings are getting together...

First Sato and Takagi, then Kobayashi-sensei and Shiratori...and now there's a case with Kogoro and Eri. And from the looks of it, the long feud will come to an end~
Gosho seems to be tying up loose ends...

Next will probably be Sonoko and Makoto, Heiji and Kazuha, and then Ran and Shinichi(or Conan and Ai).

....I have a feeling I'm missing some people...

Ayumi x Mitsuhiko and bam there happy. Unlike Mitsuhiko, Genta won't probably break into tears if Ayumi doesn't choose him and would be fine just being part of the gang...until he finds his sexy girl. Ran will fall in love with Kaito while Aoko will fall for Hakuba clearing up all the pairings.

Except Conan, he'll end up alone and miserable with a clown hat on.

For me, the best indicator of when the series is going to end at this point depends on Kogoro and Eri. If they finally get over their problems in this case, then DC is probably ending pretty soon.
...or, Aoyama-san can just panic at everyone being happy about this whole THE END IS NIGH business, and make up a bunch of random crap and throw it in before continuing on with the actual shipping plotlines.
If Kogoro and Eri are still apart after this case...eh.
Looks like I'll still be reading Conan for at least a few more years then...
And I think that there would be something to at least finish off Magic Kaito's disappointing this-was-all-an-act ending, because in my opinion the mangas can basically finish off any important storylines for the other. Maybe Kaito and Aoko will be thrown in, too?
And then something about Vermouth and Gin, just to make us laugh.

Regardless of "certain" difficulties, the Shihox Akako pairing is still the best, along with the Sonoko x Kazuha secret affair pairing.
