Don't worry, Alicetama . I doubt he is a girl... imagine him with a girl's clothe, and you won't feel right~ that's definitely a guy no matter how you look at it .
Imagining him in a cute girl dress
...
better not think her in a dress but there are girls whom I never seen with a dress, only shirts and pants so IF (said IF, IF) Sera is girl I hope she is a tomboyish one there are not many in DC
I like tomboyish girls... but not Sera ! I just hope he isn't a girl ... that would be terrible !
I will go crazy if he turns out to be a girl!
Don't worry, I've experienced the same thing with Tsubasa from Rama 1/2.
believe or not having Sera transfer to Ran's school as a female transfer student really doesn't refute any of the previous theories about his/her identity
I mean we're talking about a show where character's have imitated other people undercover, changed there ages, survived allegedly premeditated truck explosions. I mean it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say that a B.O agent or an F.B.I agent or any one else could pose as a female student
For all we know this is Vermouth in disguise or Jodie or Akai or Bourbon the possibilities really are expansive. Whether or not this spoiler is true doesn't effect things too much, in fact if anything it raises more questions. Is Sera trying to get close to Ran? does he/she have ulterior motives? is this a ploy to get at Shinichi? who knows, more questions ALWAYS more questions. This show truly does rely on obscurity in every facet

Actually, I think Sera is surname. As somebody said, Japanese people introduce themselves with surnames. The real name is probably different. Btw, nice suggestion about Sera<Seraph. I wonder if Gosho thought about this while creating this character.
I might be wrong there, but wouldn't Japanese people introduce themselves, using both their surname and their given name? (Mouri Kogorou desu, for instance). English people might very well introduce themselves just using their first name.

If that spoiler is correct, then curse you, Gosho. Can't Conan get beaten at his own game just this once?
True, it's not normal that he/she told only his/her surname. That's why it's more suspicious when it comes to gender. When he/she would have told his/her name, there wouldn't be any doubts about gender. It looks like Gosho really wanted to cover Sera's gender as long as possible.

As much as having the Eri-Kogoro couple remaining the same can be annoying, I'm all for that. I'm among those who think having Sato and Takagi kiss wasn't a good idea because Gosho can no longer use that couple to write stories (which were usually good, the Matsuda one being brilliant) centered around them once in a while.
That's exactly the problem. Gosho simply can't use any of his "meant for romance" characters if they are "together". The question is - why? Why can't he write a case anymore with Sato and Takagi? Let's explore what their relationship is like when they are together. Romance is hardly just "how they got together", it's also like "how they are together". To me it seems like Gosho can only write (poorly) how they got to be "together" but nothing beyond that. That's exactly why most of the characters are still in the "precess". That's why Kazuha and Heiji for example won't confess their love until the very end.
I gotta admit that it's much easier to write the "struggle" to be together than what happens afterwards, but was it a good idea to stretch the romances so much? No. It becomes boring after the third excuse for why those two can't be together. How many "misunderstandings" can there be along the way? Is it truly not obvious enough that those characters will be together.
As I said, if the new character is indeed a rival for Ran or Shinichi, why did Gosho decide to come up with this "card" only now? It should have come up much earlier. Gosho has never let us doubt that Shinichi and Ran won't end up together, which is why I don't believe this new character is a love rival.
Maybe because what happens afterwards is likely to be boring ?
That's why you write it. So it isn't boring. That's kinda why fiction exists. To be interesting and entertaining.
Hell, just the top of my head. An unknown culprit badly injures Takagi (like Shiratori during the bombing case). Sato investigates and when she finds him, he tries to taunt Sato into getting revenge but Sato's like "no, I've learned to be better than that." Simple, character development is shown, drama, win.

This is what I was thinking too. If gender weren't a detail, I think Gosho wouldn't have bothered with all of the vague comments and strategies. My biggest suspicion is the fact that the only two times Sera was referred to as a boy was out of hearing range: Sonoko's thoughts and Chiba behind her. In other words, no chance for correction
I would be happy if Sera was a girl...I think we need detectve girls in this show^^
and I still believe she's related to Akai...they have the same eyes and apparently her name is also a reference to Gundam(like Akai and Okiya)
that would be fun if she was Akai's sister...

yeah... true :L

I, also, would like at least part of the supposed spoiler to not be true. I've had it with Conan/Shinichi always having to be better than the other detectives.
But the other part - about the hint at being Akai's sister would definitely work out with the whole luggage/hotel thing. She was in America, Akai supposedly died, she came looking.

Spoiler:
I wouldn't be surprised. Conan will always be intellectually above everyone else (or at least at the same level), the BO being the only exception with Gin and Vermouth outsmarting Conan here and there (and even in these cases, it's (almost) always a tie).

If such an entity really existed, wouldn't all honest, hard-working people be happy?"

Who knows. Gosho may always choose to put it in a twist one day and say 'hey, I want an actual rival for Shinichi/Conan'.

Another discovery: The one with glasses is Okiya but maybe Okiya is non-smoker. The one with hat is Sera. Are both of them associated with Akai.
Also had the same thought, since this would totally fit into my "theory" about Subarus true identity. Also it is way more imaginable that young persons are working for or with Akai rather than Misa and Billy(vol.40 file 412 page 17,18 http://www.dctp.ws/V40-Reader/V40-9Read/A16.html).
I am not Japanese but I think that it is hard to imagine that a young person (in our case Akai) is in charge of(or gives an order to) two older persons (Misa and Billy) in the Japenese society, but maybe i am wrong.
However taken it as a fact that Okiya and Sera were working for Akai does not answers the question of her/his real identity.
I personally would not be suprised if it would turn out that Sera is a relative of Okiya or Shu. No matter if brother or sister. The first meeting between Ran and Okiya is quite comparable with the first meeting between Ran and Sera.
Just some random midnight thoughts from continental Europe.
In this sense I wish everybody a good night.

I doubt it. Conan has become an example for kids in Japan, and therefore you can't have him losing against the first newcomer.
