I do think it's possible that Sera's a relative of Shinichi. It would explain Conan's sudden annoyance for what really seems no reason at all. He might be thinking something along the lines of, "Oh no, not my cousin, my family's full of geniuses. I'm going to have to be really careful so they don't find out."
We know his name is Sera, and we know that in DC the character's names have hidden meanings!
Maybe if we unveil the mystery behind the name, we could get some hints about what type of person he is, no?
Worth a try. Perhaps there's a detective out there whose name in a heavy Japanese accent sounds a bit like Sera or could be shortened to Sera (Morisu Ruburan->Mouri Ran). So a 'se' sound and a 'ra' sound.
Hey my first thought about him being Shinichi's family maybe true. I mean I wasn't the only one to think that! And it would explain... Not only the fact of Conan's annoyance but also the use of Conan's name! Kudo's could inform him about Shinichi's situation.

Personally I would prefer a girl by a long shot but it's probably a guy. An assertive powerful girl flirting seriously or not Ran is another posibility although I don't believe it because it's the shonen jump

I believe there's a statement from Gosho-sensei confirming the new characters name and also stating that he's an 'important' character.
Sera being Shinichi's cousin would be an interesting twist. And well, I haven't looked up the meaning of the kanji, but you could read Sera as Sela, which seems more girlish.

It was kind of both. An earthquake hit and then multiple tsunamis came after. I would think that Japan would need to re-stabilize first, but I saw some scans of the new chapter a few pages ago.
Okay, so the new character's name is pronounced "Sera" however! It's highly likely this is a last name. People in Japan don't just introduce themselves using their first names, after all.
