Are you referrin to the Kan-o case? Or has there been a case where misspelled English has been used? If it was a hint, shouldn't the misspelling be more regular? I tried substituting r for l, but that certainly not the right approach.

I was thinking of the first Kaito Kid case.

He misspelled plenty in this chapter alone, plus horrible grammar.  People just wouldn't notice it without reading the raw since we redid the English to make sense.  For instance, the kid says "becase" instead of "because" in the flashback when the culprit gave him the letter.

+1
Could they possibly have corrected Gosho's English for the German edition? Becase it seemed perfectly fine to me and back then and I was surprised how bad his English had gotten in the meantime.

We can of course explore the possibility that these mistakes were planted on purpose, but that doesn't seem to get us very far anyway..

I think that thread is mainly about spoken English..

@topic: I didn't notice the other theory Chekhov put forward until now: I like the idea about. Unfortunately, pickled eggs and bells (last orders, which would tie in with the last sentence) aren't exclusive to that pub, not even the name is.
But what the castle mean in a pub context? And who could the white back refer to?

Sherlock Holmes search engine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_folklore
Using the links, I can only say that I've found nothing as far as Holmes is concerned, except that he was called a wizard four times, as pointed out by Dus. Otherwise, a few small steps with the folklore:

- Bell: Assuming it has something to do with time, "Chime Hours". Would probably point to midnight.
- Long-nosed: "Bowerman's Nose". The best I can make out of it is that he was a hunter (pointing to the killer in the letter?) turned to stone by a bunch of witches.
- Wizard: "The Wizard of Alderly Edge". Just because there's a wizard in there, and because minor research brought me to Castle Rock.
- Castle: Castle Rock, or else "Upsall Castle". The wizard in Upsall would be that dude from the 17th century that supposedly left a curse to anyone that lived in there and wasn't loyal to the king and country.

It's late here, so I'm not going into any details now...I'll let you guys tear this stuff apart.

Edit: Rolling bell- mix "Cheese Rolling" and a cheese bell and there you have it! Besides, chesse is popular in England...isn't it? .__. *is tired and has to stop trying*

And I think the reason Gosho's taken so long to give us something for the main plot is because he's planning something bigger. Or not. Just my opinion.
or he's stalling because he's still making a tons of money off this series :P
Or maybe it's because this week is a national holiday in Japan.  :P

And I have absolutely no idea what's going on in this thread right now.

First thing that comes to my mind when thinking of England and wizards - Harry Potter.

Can it be that the nerdy glasses asian boy is finally going to meet with the nerdy glasses western boy?  :o

But Harry doesn't have a particularly long nose, has he?
I don't know whether or not I've written this already but I associated the rolling bell with the Bow Bell. A true Cockney must have been born within earshot of that bell, so this could also be a stand-in for the entire East End. Unfortunately, Cockney rhyming sland didn't seem to lead anywhere.

The actor who portrays Harry Potter is Daniel Radcliffe. Daniel's mother is jewish, and that makes Daniel also a jew. The (antisemetic) stereotypes for jews usually have big or long noses.

Problem solved  ;D

(I'm only sarcastic here, and I'd like to remind that I'm jewish myself)
