I don't think it's surprise Akai is alive, even if he deduced Akai had been killed I'd think he'd be happy at the possibility he had been wrong, rather than horrified. Much more likely he and Akai miscalculated when they thought the Org. would concentrate on finding Shiho rather than do something that basically declares war on the FBI by sending out the fake. Either that or he realizes it's possible the plan to fake Akai's death didn't go smoothly and Okiya isn't who he initially thought. (A Mission:Impossible plan that blows up in the protagonists' faces (and in a way they didn't really to intend to happen) would be a good twist. Conan actually believing that Holmes fan nonsense wouldn't.)

In literature and fiction, the author can do a lot of things. Like, reviving the death and misleading the reader. But I myself think, that it's only good to revive a character, when there is a plausible reason. In my view, the reason for Akais death is much more important, than for him being still alive. Cause his death would prove the importance of Kir and, that the BO is able to carry out there plans all along, what makes them even more dangerous. I read all the guesses here, but I still can't believe them, cause i just can't see a reason for it all. Well, if Akai is alive, i will be slighty disappointed cause sometimes, a dead charakter is much more interesting than a revived one. But well, maybe I think about it a bit too scientific... should go back to my studies...

- Akai is supposed to play dead. Why does he appear in public? Or

- Okiya is Akai. So who the heck is that other Akai?

You have it all wrong. I was lruking, but i decided to make an account so i could answer your questions.
Alright, first of all.

1. Akai was shot. Then had the side of his face blown up. So, who says hat he couldn`t have had his memory erased? (as Jodie said.)
Back in the robbery case, akai didn`t reply. It could be, because he couldn`t remember anything.

2. Okiya is akai? In the last panel of chapter 700, we see Akai &Okiya. Both standing there. Asuming that he had his memory erased, we could say that the 2 people standing there weren`t the same person. And that the guy standing there, is, infact Akai.

Hmmm... The reason Conan is so shocked could be:

a. Akai is suppose to be dead, like really dead dead, so the only reason he's here is that he's someone else.
b. Akai is suppose to play dead, but he's not playing dead.
c. Conan realized if Akai is alive, it could pose danger somehow

One thing for sure, Subaru is not Akai.

I don't know, for some reason, I feel like I won't be satisfy if Akai simply just "survived", if he is indeed Alive, then I would need a plausible explanation, or else, it might be that he's DEAD, and someone is disguising as Akai
