akonyl's theory based on nothing:

well like other people have been saying, the shadow is the boy. But what if he wasn't a boy anymore?!?!

I mean, there weren't any year numbers on the entries, although that could very well be because gosho doesn't want to actually say what year it is :P

also, in the notebook it said "no choice but to kill..." but it didn't say who. Maybe the older person committed suicide?

the red substance in the book sticking the pages together is probably just spilled wine, but what if it's old dried blood :O

I like your theory! I'd been wondering if maybe the kid had grown up, and I hadn't even considered the possiblity of the red stuff on the page being wine! But, if it was the kid who was looking through the window/door/thing, then why is the coffin child sized? Was the person writing in the notebook a midget?

who knows?!?! maybe it was a pet coffin.

and I've noticed that it seems more often than not, if conan doesn't immediately identify a red substance as blood, it's actually something else that the reader/viewer is supposed to think is blood.

There is red wine next to where Conan found the book. In DC rules, blood normally darkens when it dries, so if it's still red and dry already then that would suggest wine instead. I steered clear of alternate interpretations of the words because I don't know enough japanese. Do people use the word "kid" for things like pets or non-living objects as a term of endearment?

I don't particularly know, but I seem to recall some case where they thought a kid had gone missing and it turned out the person was talking about their cat or something, dunno if it was a manga-based episode or an AO though.

while layton did indeed do this, I have a eeling I've seen it before in the 550+ episodes of detective conan that exist

but who knows, maybe I'm just retarded and my brain crossed the streams.

No...  I'm pretty sure no one got confused between "dog" and "child" there, since it had already been established before that page that the one that got killed was the dog.

Anyhow, what you were really getting at was...  "ã

Kor wrote:Anyway, I still think it's a bit illogical that Conan has good hearing but is tone deaf.
The reason why people (like me) can sing in the right pitch, is because their musical hearing is good. (I'm not talking here about singing good. I'm talking about hitting the right pitch and staying in key.) But well, that's Gosho for us.
Not necessarily.  When I was younger, anyway, I could usually recognize notes, and I guess it was due to the fact that I played a musical instrument.  I could also tell when something was out of tune.  As for my singing, I just suck big time at it and can't hold a note worth anything, back then and now, but, I could hear it when it came to music alone or with whatever I was playing on.  It's sorta like how I used to learn how to play songs by ear.

Shinichi's character plays/played violin, like the Sherlock Holmes Otaku that he is.  If he's been playing for a long time, his being able to recognized notes and tunes isn't that surprising and noticing when they're offkey.

I find it interesting that Gosho wrote his character in this way.  He can hear and understand the notes, can probably play to them, but just doesn't have the voice or vocal chords for singing.

Anyway, going slightly back on-topic, I'm lost right now with this case so far, but it wouldn't be surprising if the out of tune key has something to do with this case.  Too bad it's difficult to tell which note it is.  Can't see the piano well enough for where Conan pushed the key.  Now I'm wondering if that will be significant since it wasn't shown clearly which key he played.

As for the trail of chips and the mess...at first, I was wondering if there was some bizarre thing going on where someone was trying to lure someone in with the chips, but, yeah...farfetched and stupid sounding.

Something else I was wondering, was if the diary or whatever it was, was actually older than it looked, but figured that wouldn't work either seeing as how I'm sure a year would've been included, not just the month and day.

I still do have the feeling, though, that there is no boy there and that this so-called boy is actually some reclusive adult who's been hiding out there...but I"m sure there are some holes in that theory too...

Well, I can't deny the fact that it's a matter of practice as well, but there are many examples of singers who never learned music or hearing even once in their life, yet they could sing pretty damn well.
ssjup81 wrote: It's sorta like how I used to learn how to play songs by ear.
This is why there shouldn't be any difference. Our voice is a living instrument, and just like we can hear a certain note and play it on the instrument, we can also "play" it on our vocal chords. Someone who can here a slightly off-tuned note, has a very good hearing, therefore if he sings so badly, his own singing should hurt disturb his ears.
One can say that he doesn't have much self-awareness when he sings. Juts like many teenaged girls who think their actually good at singing yet they can't hear their mistakes (because their not musicians and never tried to learn music) but here we have someone who hears something that normal people (people with lack of ear training) won't be able to hear so well.

As I said, I think it should be either C or B (Do or Si). At the left side of the panel, there seem to be a black key, partly shown, which means there are 3 black keys in that place (I mean black key - white key - black key - white key - black key), so if you count from there, you will get to my result. I can't be sure, but I think it's more likely that Conan presses on C.

The perfect pitch/tone deaf thing confuses me too...if he has perfect pitch, that has to do with the ability to recognize the differences in the vibrations that happen within your ear when different pitches are sounded, and everyone I know that has perfect pitch can tell whether or not they are singing the note they "aimed" at, because they can still hear those vibrations. "Tone deaf" doesn't just mean that you can't hit the notes you're aiming at; it means that you can't differentiate between pitches, so you think you are hitting the notes you aimed at. Both at once?... But I've decided it's funny enough to not care about too much.  :P

I agree that the case is probably going to turn out to be a "near-miss" where somebody meant to do something evil but can't go through with it, or else a complete misunderstanding where there are just some nice people who live in a really creepy house. And have a coffin. And like to write about killing people in their diaries. There's no law against it. Maybe it's fanfic.
