Besides, it's not like Chikara himself appeared so we can start looking at him as a character with potential relevance.

Spoiler:
Being connected to Shūkichi/shogi gives Chikara significance from the get-go, because Shūkichi is an Akai and a Haneda, and shogi is at the center of the murder that is a crux of this arc.

Gosho went out of his way to give him a design (and not have his assistants do it), a name, and has had him appear for what is now the 3rd time this arc. Gosho could've had Shūkichi play 2 different opponents (in 899–902/785–786 and 945–947/849–850), and had the daughter of a 3rd shogi player appear in this case... but no.

I can't deny that I want Chikara to have some kind of role beyond, "oh, he's merely Shūkichi's opponent, nothing more," just like I want Momiji and Muga to have roles beyond, "oh, she's merely Kazuha's love rival, nothing more," and "he's merely a butler for Kazuha's love rival, nothing more."

However, all these elements about Chikara Katsumata add up to show that he has a role to play beyond world-building, alone.

If we could fly out of that window hand in hand, hover over this great city, gently remove the roofs, and and peep in at the queer things which are going on, the strange coincidences, the plannings, the cross-purposes, the wonderful chains of events, working through generations, and leading to the most outre results, it would make all fiction with its conventionalities and foreseen conclusions most stale and unprofitable.”

Hmmph well I'm ruling Chikara out as a RUM candidate considering how LONG he actually waited for Shukichi to return during file 899-902 and I'm also ruling RUM out as a shogi player considering his potential "impatient" nature since shogi players tend to require their upmost patience during matches.

"Chikara is challenged by Shukichi Haneda who wishes to obtain the last of the seven Shogi titles he needs to becomes meijin. On the day of the final game, they are tied 3-3. Chikara is unaware that Shukichi's love, Yumi Miyamoto, has been kidnapped. Shukichi leaves the match and the building immediately, surprising Chikara, and spends almost all of his assigned thinking time looking for Yumi's whereabouts. Chikara waits patiently for Shukichi to return. Despite effectively having to play a one-sided speed match against Chikara, Shukichi wins and claims the seventh title." [quoted from wiki https://www.detectiveconanworld.com/wik ... _Katsumata]

But hey, if he actually turns out to be related to RUM then it's my lost in losing this bet. ;)

which isn't a special treatment, considering he has drawn countless case characters and recurring side ones.
Drawing more new characters sounds like more unnecessary tedious work, and he tends to prefer having consistent rival figures in his story anyway.

believe me, I would most definitely welcome a surprising relevance to him to the main plot, whether as a plot device for Kohji info or as an active BO member.... however... his extremely limited appearance and portrayal in this arc hasn't left us any real implication of potential importance in the future. And, imo, it goes without saying that he is far from a minimally satisfying candidate to suddenly become the main antagonist Rum at this current stage of the Rum plot (to top it off with the recent contradictory "impatient" hint).

If that's the case, then, again, Gosho could just have his assistants do it.

I still think he's more likely to be Rum than Rumi, but weighed against Kanenori and Hyōe? Right now, I'll take them over Chikara. While Muga's involvement has been fairly consistent since his debut, Chikara's is more lengthly—in fact, he was introduced (899–902/785–786, at the beginning of the arc) even before Hyōe (913–917/810–812, around 15 files into the arc). After the Bourbon arc (where Rei first appeared as Scar Akai in 677–679/563–564—50 files into the arc, after Shūichi/Subaru—and then appeared as himself in 793–795/667–668, 170 files into the arc, after Masumi), we'd expect Rumi (introduced in 966–968/889–890, nearly 70 files into the arc), Kanenori (975–977/894–895, nearly 80 files into the arc) or Muga (introduced in 981–983/885–886, over 80 files into the arc) to be Rum, in terms of suspect introduction order... so I'd say it'd be more of a subversion, in those terms, if Hyōe or Chikara turned out to be Rum.

In terms of Rum arc appearances...

Chikara has had 2 cameo appearances (899–902/785–786 and 945–947/849–850).

Hyōe has had 6 cameo appearances (918–920/814–815; 978–980/896–897; 1,000–1,005/927–928; 1,006–1,008/941–942; 1,013–1,017; and 1,027–1,031), and 2 appearances where he was in the thick of the case from start to finish (913–917/810–812 and 987–989/909–910).

Rumi has had 2 cameo appearances (1,000–1,005/927–928 and 1,006–1,008/941–942), and 4 appearances where she was in the thick of the case from start to finish (966–968/889–890; 978–980/896–897; 987–989/909–910 and 1,032–1,034).

Kanenori has had 3 cameo appearances (978–980/896–897; 1,000–1,005/927–928 and 1,006–1,008/941–942), and 2 appearances where he was in the thick of the case from start to finish (975–977/894–895 and 1,027–1,031).

Muga has had 2 cameo appearances (990–993/916–917 and 1,000–1,005/927–928), and 2 appearances where he was in the thick of the case from start to finish (981–983/885–886 and 1,039–1,042).

For a point of comparison, here are Bourbon arc appearances...

Shūichi/Subaru had 5 cameo appearances (635–637/524–525; 690–692/571–572; 753–755/622–623; 775–777/656–657 and 815–817/699–700), and 8 appearances where he was in the thick of the case from start to finish (622–624/509–510; 638–640/510–511; 664–666/542–543; 700–704/578–581; 796–800/671–674; 809–811/684–685; 812–814/690–691 and 818–824/701–704).

Masumi had 4 cameo appearances (775–777/656–657; 781–786/652–655; 787–789/661–662 and 801–803/675–676), and had 7 appearances where she was in the thick of the case from start to finish (768–770/646–647; 771–774/648–650; 778–780/651; 796–800/671–674; 812–814/690–691; 815–817/699–700 and 818–824/701–704).

Rei/Bourbon had 3 cameo appearances (801–803/675–676; 804–808/681–683 and 815 and 817/699–700), and had 5 appearances where he was in the thick of the case from start to finish (677–679/563–564 and 700–704/578–581 as Scar Akai; 793–795/667–668, 796–800/671–674 and 818–824/701–704 as Tōru Amuro).

And for another point of comparison, here are Vermouth arc appearances...

Vermouth as Dr. Araide had 3 cameo appearances (254–257/190–191; 355–357/274–275 and 420–422/338–339), and had 3 appearances where she was in the thick of the case from start to finish (287–289/230–231; 328–330/253–254; and 429–434/345).

Jodie had 7 appearances where she was in the thick of the case from start to finish (270–272/226–227; 287–289/230–231; 338–340/271–272; 341–343/277–278; 420–422/338–339; 426–428/343–344 and 429–434/345).

Shūichi had 8 cameo appearances (325–327/258–259; 328–330/253–254; 335–337/269–270; 350–354/286–288; 377–379/307–308; 380–383/309–311; 417–419/335–336 and 429–434/345), and had 2 appearances where he was in the thick of the case from start to finish (287–289/230–231 and 420–422/338–339).

Just putting that info out there.

Certainly, it'd lend to Chikara's involvement if he had more than cameo appearances.

Right now, I think it's most likely Chikara will have some other involvement—right now, I think that's more likely than him being a BO member.

As for Rei's "impatient" hint... is he solely basing that on the texts he's gotten from Rum to hurry up with his Shinichi investigation? If so, then I wouldn't count it as a point against Chikara being Rum. If not, then I'd agree with both of you that it is a point against Chikara being Rum.

Can't say I'd be confident over that we will get anything relevant from him, but I certainly welcome any potential for more plot development from him (and I certainly agree that the chances of him being BO, let alone Rum, is very low).

Because we can't infer how well acquainted Bourbon is with Rum, we can only take his hint as it seems... a truthful/accurate description of Rum (considering that we have seen evidence that support such claim). I don't see why Gosho would bother feeding us an inaccurate hint after having Bourbon make roundabout statements to say "can't tell you how much I know of Rum.... but I'll share you this hint".

Spoiler:
A concern of mine is if Rum is impatient in regards to matters that involve his role as a BO member (i.e., Shinichi Kudō's potential survival), or is impatient in general. If it's the former, then Rum may be keeping their impatience to themselves, when it comes to dealing with those outside of the BO. If it's the latter, then Rum isn't being so selective with who they're showing their impatience to.

Beyond that, how does Rum's impatience manifest? How does Rum express it?

Hyōe: "Switch me over to Morofushi... I need to ask him something... What are you waiting for? Switch me over!" (File 1,032, Page 10, Panel 7)

Muga: "Ms. Ran... we've been walking for 10 minutes and 30 seconds... have we not arrived at the intended location yet?" (File 1,040, Page 6, Panel 5)

As opposed to those two, Rumi's and Kanenori's impatience is more about interjections of theirs that last more than one line/a few lines... such as Rumi's implied accusation against Hyōe (988/910), and Kanenori's continued interaction with Kogorō and his insistence on challenging him to a reasoning competition (975–977/894–895).

Rum: "I demand information on Shinichi Kudo... Time is money! Hurry up, Bourbon... (File 1,008, Page 12, Panel 1/2)

Rum: "Hurry up with that information on Shinichi Kudō! Time is money!" (File 1,011, Page 8, Panel 3/4)

If these demands were more specific in these texts, then I'd say it'd be more likely that Muga is Rum... but they're more vague than his interjection, last case.

Rum was described specifically as "excessively impatient", so it's being implied that it leaks beyond a normal "BO-role" amount, and without Bourbon's specification, we can only take it as a general personality trait of Rum, that was obvious/impressionable enough to stick out to Bourbon, and distinct enough to function as a hint for Conan.

Yeah, "exceedingly" impatient was how it got translated, I believe.

So, to you, how does Muga's specificity square with Rum's more vague texts? No need to hide specificity behind vagueness when you're already signing your texts with your top-secret codename...

Spoiler:
yes well, the early spoiler translation was using "excessively", which ultimately is a synonym with the same implication.

Rum's "vague" text (which btw wasn't really that vague) wasn't the only thing expressing his exceeding/excessive impatience, but also the fact that he kept nagging Bourbon with another hurrying message that contained now new instructions. The "vague" text itself was already emphasizing his urgency when he told him to hurry up in two ways: "time is money" & "hurry up". Don't see why Gosho needs to go with more specificity to portray Rum's overall time sensitivity.

Spoiler: Rum's messages
Well we would be making a very infantile error if we assign the two back to back messages from Rum as a sign of his impatience. Rum can very well be like Kuroda. As Kuroda was impatiently pestering Kansuke to switch him over to Morofushi so that he can possibly instruct the latter to keep off Amuro. But this doesn't prove Kuroda is an imaptient guy, rather proves that the need was urgent. So similarly for Rum the need about getting info on Kudou Shinichi is very urgent.

Spoiler:
Because it's what makes Muga unique. Again, if Rum's texts reflected that specificity ("Bourbon, it's been _ hours and _ minutes..."), it would be one of those details that would swing me towards Muga = Rum.

Spoiler:
Yeah, I was wondering about in which cases Rum's impatience ends up showing through—in specific cases when Rum deems it important enough—as opposed to Rum being generally impatient, and always inquiring about efficiency and progress.

As a service professional, Muga is naturally going to be impatient. Even more so if he's in the service of such an upper class family, with such high standards. For me, doubt remains as to whether his impatience is intertwined with criminal intent. Nothing I've seen or heard leads me to the conclusion that his impatience is intertwined with criminal intent.
“Life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent. We would not dare to conceive the things which are really mere commonplaces of existence.

Spoiler:
that type of phrasing (stating two time units) hasn't really been commonly used, so it would stick out as a sore thumb to any reader that's following the plot. If Gosho is going for a "hidden suspect" route, then that would be a very unlikely move for him to make. It would be obvious that he is copying Rum's dialogue and in turn framing Muga, which defeats the "hidden suspect" purpose.

ultimately, there's only so much you can do to portray impatience, if the character in question is intended to not only stay unknown, but behind a phone. I just don't see the point in questioning Bourbon's clear and evidence-consistent profiling of Rum's personality.

Impatience... i think it could be a family trait... especially when one who is close to death is pressed on time to find out the answer to a hidden treasure...

"Sunset Manor, and up close it looks even more like a haunted house. It once belonged to the multi-millionaire Renya Karasuma, who inherited it from his mother and hired scholars to search after the treasure for him. However, he killed them one by one to pressure the others to find the treasure." quoted from wiki: https://www.detectiveconanworld.com/wik ... nset_Manor

Yeah, which goes along with the theory that "CARASUMA" is Rum's surname, and that Kohji was actually revealing Rum's identity with his dying message (like how Hiyama revealed his killer's identity "SENBA", File 950).
