Jodie's name

Post by ten »

Quick question about Jodie's real name...
In the anime ep 345 the name given by Vermouth is Jodie Starling
(this is obviously a reference to the Silence of the Lambs character Clarice Starling, played by Jodie Foster)

The question I have is about the manga for the same part, in the english translation at least, it cuts away before revealing Jodie's last name so from the manga we don't know what her real name is -- is this the same in the RAW japanese manga?
What I really want to know is.. is the name Jodie Starling the real name that Gosho Aoyama intended her to have?

Jodie Saintemillion is the name she assumed while undercover (and as an English teacher at Teitan, of course). Jodie Starling is her real name, from what I understand.

yes it's her manga name. Her name also has a derivation like Conan Edogawa, Haibara Ai, Kogoro Mouri etc etc...

I believe whoever translated the manga simply didn't understand the name and excluded it, but I haven't actually read that chapter in a long time.

To answer your question: Yes, her name is Jodie Starling all around :P.

Actually, her name is Romanized as Staring in the file 500 character guide (and the volume 49 tankoubon version of the guide retained that spelling). However, it's rendered as スターリング in katakana, so that particular Romanization might just be an error no one caught or bothered to correct. (Extending the previous vowel sound with ー is typically how the Japanese approximate an end-of-syllable r, but would be superfluous with the リ (ri) if Staring were the intended spelling.) I suspect it's a mistake by Shonen Sunday, and Starling makes more sense, but I'd like to see another canon Romanization of her name before deciding for certain what Aoyama intended. (I don't suppose anyone remembers her flashing her FBI ID in the manga or something?)

Edit: It's スターリング in volume 42. Which should be Starling or Sterling I think.

no I don't remember and highly doubt she ever flashed her FBI badge in the manga especially since the FBI have no jurisdiction in Japan -- and they were always worried about the local Japanese police finding out about an FBI investigation in Japan

Not too surprised to see an error like that get by; I think it's safe to say it's Starling.

yep yep jodie sensei's name is jodie starling, with the reference to Silence of the Lambs's Jodie Foster. I mean, c'mon, who's the most known female FBI agent in popular culture? The name was in File 500, I think.
I am five evil steps ahead of you.

You can go ahead and check the ED credits for any episode she's been in (well, after they stopped using her alias).
Since it was derived from the Clarice Starling character in Silence of the Lambs, it's most definitely supposed to be Starling.
What, Japanese messing up a romanization?  I'm totarry suhoked totally shocked.

^ No surprise to me. I've seen it where the romaji is right but the pronounciation is wrong, but it can't be helped because of the Japanese language itself. At least with Jodie's last name, they technically got the pronounciation right when they say it. ^^;  The "r" becomes an "l" anyways.

Heh interesting, apparently he has Hannibal Lecter as the detective profiled in volume 19 feature and his recommendation is Silence of the Lambs =)
