The 14th Target dub (not sub) - revisited

Post by helloworld »

For those of you who've watched Movie 2, you'll know that the targets have their respective numbers in the kanji of their names (or in #4's case, his surname). Obviously, when FUNimation decided to dub the movie, they couldn't use kanji as rationale for each of the 13 people, so they made up new ones. New horribly pathetic ones. The absurdity goes from "has six children" to "wrote two books" - even "attended a culinary school with an eight-year program." Some, such as the name Tammy Diez, are fine, but those are definitely the exceptions rather than the rule.

My question is, then, can you think of better reasons or better names, for your version of the English dub, to associate the targets with their respective numbers? Feel free to copy and paste the list below for convenience purposes. I've left the dubbed versions of the names you aren't allowed to change since they're the main DC characters and all. (You are, however, free to change the rationales.)

13 - Joseph Meguire -
12 - Eva Kadan -
11 - Hiroshi Agasa -
Fake 10 -
10 -
9 -
8 -
7 -
6 -
5 - Richard Moore -
4 -
3 - Ninzaburo Santos -
2 -
1 - "Jimmy" Kudo -

Here are mine:

10 - Henry Stenson. Despite the obvious reason being that he has a "ten" in his name, Henrik Stenson is the name of an actual golfer.
9 - Chris Heegner. There are exactly nine Heegner numbers. Also, Chris Manche. Manche, in French, can refer to a baseball inning, of which there are nine. Along those lines, Chris Entrada would work as well (entrada can refer to a baseball inning in Spanish).
7 - I'd keep "Nana" as her name. Make those English kids learn some Japanese.
3 - Ninzaburo Santos III. He's from a rich family anyway, so he probably has a number attached to his name. Nothing like three Ninzaburos in the famly.

Yeah....I mean, seriously, an eight-year program? Lame.

Speaking of whom, here's my suggestion for 8: Octavian (insert last name here - I picked Montgomery). Why?

1) Octavian - "oct" refers to 8.
2) Having a Roman emperor's name as a last name gives them that regal aura that he seems to have in the Japanese version.
3) Octavian, the emperor, was also known as Augustus. August is the eighth month of the year.
4) As for Montgomery, I picked it in a list of the 1000 most common last names in the U.S., lol.

more effort has been put into this in this topic than Funimation has put in the entire series (and this is coming from a huge Funi supporter)

I don't like what Funi has done with Conan at all, I don't even like what they did with dragon ball and that is their strongest product, at least even though they changed all the music they kept the name of the series and most of the characters original names.

Because I'm awesome, I came up with another one:

6 - Damon Zahl.

Reason:
Damon is the un-umlauted version of the German dämon - "demon" (correct me if I'm wrong). Zahl in German means a number, as in a digit. Put them together, and you get "demon number", which of course is 666.

Plus, Damon is a cool name for rogue guys like that photographer.

[edit]
4 - Russ P. Dafoe -> anagrams to "four spades"
4 - Luke St. John (also Mark or Matthew) -> two of the four Biblical gospels

They could have used roman numerals for some names.

13 - Joseph Meguire -
12 - Eva Kadan -
11 - Hiroshi Agasa -
Fake 10 -
10 - Xavier (Insert Last name here)
9 -  IXidro (Insert Last name here)
8 - I think Octavious works here good
7 - Helloworld is right keep this one as Nana
6 - VIctor (Insert Last name here)
5 - Richard Moore -
4 - IVan (Insert last name here)
3 - Ninzaburo Santos -
2 - (Insert First name here) IIjima
1 - "Jimmy" Kudo -

I agree with your Ivan and Victor choices, cause in the movie, the number coincidence for them was more of a "oh, I need two more guys to fill out my list" rather than part of the reason to kill them. It's too bad the triple i doesn't exist in English (otherwise you could have done it for 3 as well).

9 could also be Christopher Katz, because "katz" have nine lives.
2 - Huston Norfolk. Why Huston? Because the "uston" in his name can turn into "u.s. ton", which is two thousand pounds. Another alternative: Mason Toomer - "too" sounds like "two".

For Agasa, it could be like "his house number is 11". I mean, (shadowman) did, after all, shoot him at his house; he had to have known the house number.

the bigger problem here is that you are setting up a system. this system does not apply to the names we already know.
in the japanese version its all kanji based. your trying to get the number in there so how do the names we already no fit into such a system?
its better to keep it absurd and show there is no system.... just not that absurd... 8 yrs....

Moore is 5 letters best i could do
helloworld you are really creative

Well, it's more absurd when you actually see the kanji being highlighted and people saying a totally different reason for the number. I just don't see why Funimation can't also use English-language wordplay; Japanese isn't the only language you can mess around with.

[edit]
Here's another one. It's more simplistic than my other ones, but:

12 - Eva Kadan - her law office is on Queen Street (recall that she had the package delivered; the culprit would have known the address to pull that off)

try to search it at en.wikipedia.org then type case closed: the fourteenth target...
it has a short description about the connections of the cards to the victims...
hope this will help you.... ;)

I think you misunderstood the point of this topic.

I love your idea for #6, helloworld. I've yet to watch this movie in Japanese but now I think I will...
