Name Meanings

Post by jelly_Ace »

I'm kinda curious about the meanings of the names of DC characters ever since it came to me that Shinichi's name kinda means "one truth". I looked shin up in an online dictionary, and apparently it means truth. So shin + ichi = one truth? True one? Does this constitute a pun?

And how about the other characters' names? Do their meanings have something to do with the DC world?

新一 means new one since the kanji "新" means new and not one truth like you've mentioned. There is also another spelling of Shin'ichi which is "真一". That one is one truth.

This is kind of a cool topic, as the names in DC both have meanings in themselves (e.g., Ran = orchid) and are often allusions to famous detective stories or writers (Ran from Edogawa Ranpo).
Let's see how complete a list we all can make, since there are quite a few knowledgeable DC fans on this board, I think that would be a lot of fun.

PS:  I see there's a claim on wikipedia that Mouri Ran comes from the Japanese distortion of Maurice Leblanc (Mourisu Ruburan), creator of Lupin.  That seems likely, even though I always thot it came from Ranpo.

r u sure? because i translate '真一' as 'real one'... unless you're talking about some kind of hidden meaning that usually happen in names.

Speaking of names, only one comes to my mind: Okiya Subaru :P

Wiki says it's a pun of Casval (sounds as KIYASUBARU) or Char Aznable of Mobile Suit Gundam. Not much of a fan, so I don't know, but Char is one of the enemies here. All I know is he reappeared in Zeta Gundam w/o his mask and became one of the good guys (then became a bad guy again in the Counterattack). Some say this is proof that Okiya is Akai... but meh, I don't know :P

Shinichi can be read both as "真一" and "新一", in Shinichi's case the characters of his name is 新一 (new one).

Also to that point, Ikeda Shuuichi is/was the voice actor for both characters ^_^.

I wish they could have done the attempt to make them have a meaning in the dubbed version, It would have been even better if they just kept the names, but at least not just Jimmy Kudo or Anita or Hartley ;D Any Ideas??

You know, like in the movie the Truman Show??

Truman = True Man

Jimmy Truman maybe  ;D hehehe

Ran did come from Maurice Leblanc. Aoyama-sensei said so on one of the mystery writers he profiled in one volume. I think it was in volume two or three.

I find it funny that Shinichi's name is read as "new one", since Vermouth has called him as the BO's new Silver Bullet.

How about the Osaka people? What about their names?

Hattori Heiji? I think it's from Nomura's Zenigata Heiji (the coin-throwing policeman). Speaking of which, there's a Zenigata in Lupin III.

I can't find any police connections for Hattori, but it is the surname of Hattori Hanzo, a famous ninja (Hanzo was also used in Naruto)
