Of course it's because of APTX4869, but did you wonder why Conan shrank instead of dying? I've searched into personal data and here's the possible causes I found:

a) Blood type (don't know Haibara's though)
b) Presence of colds virus/fever
c) Any hot/burning sensation (caused by fever as well, but can be caused by wine)

My best answers are B and C though, because the shrunken body is responsive to ginger schnapps (ginger is used as cold treatment in China) and is more effective with feverish symptoms (from movie = not canon). Maybe Shinichi had dormant colds virus before he shrank (???)

I think it was because, it wasn't meant to be a killing drug anyway.
there are already many drugs that can kill,
so why invent a new one?
haibara might have planned for the drug to be a drug that turns people young.

But according to the manga, the sample rat that shrunk was only one, meaning a rare occasion. It should imply from that case that the drug was for assassination (without a trace, unlike other drugs).

It was the drug's side effect, so basically I guess Shinichi (and Haibara) just got lucky and got that instead of dieing. Though, I dunno what makes them any different from the other people that had taken the drug (if I remember correctly, it had been used on more people, he was just the only one that wasnt confirmed dead)

Reminds me of the Tell Me A Lie story by Gosho that ended in 7(?) pages. It would have been a nice comedic story if he continued that

Drug wasn't used on a lots of people. And it was intented to Kill.

Now Ai said that there was some mouse that managed to survive. And we know that durg is still in BO possesion. But since Conan and Ai are still okay - this means that drug is didn't shrank anyone yet. It either killed the victim, or weren't used at all. Odd isn't? It's a unic drug, last (probably) work of Sherry. And she sounded like THE ONLY sciensist in BO. Wth?

And i think... There was a mouse, Conan, Ai. What all of them have in common? =) They somewhat share similar dna strands. Or was it? Maybe a unusual DNA strand caused them to survive...
But if initial idea was Immortality\Eternal youth\Kickass shtick! what sort of stuff would happen with those three then?

That's the question itself... Why did he shrink instead of dying?

And no, Haibara's mom and dad were also scientists working for the Org. The Org hires a lot of scientists and computer technicians/experts. And also, we can't say if the drug was used on really few people because I think there is a considerable long list of people killed with the drug and Shinichi was the only one unconfirmed of death. They developed the drug to leave no trace in case they plan to kill someone... I think

Well sure her APTX is a work of art - and it seems that noone else is ever able to made such thing....
