Favorite type of case?

Post by Brekclub85 »

There are three basic types of mysteries in DC:

The whodunits- the standard multi-suspect mystery,
The howdunits-we know who did it, we just need to figure out how,
The (as I call them) open mysteries-cases like the Genta being followed one in volume 30, or the haunted house from volume 2 and the treasure hunt from volume 4 where we either just need to figure out what's going on or where the location of something is (These are most often DB cases)

Of the 3, which is your favorite kind of DC mystery?

I enjoy the howdunits myself, some of the tricks Gosho thought of are seriously ingenious.

I also think howdunits are the best. They are the best to try and solve them yourself :)

The ones involving the BO.  ;D

Now, seriously, I like the three types in the inverse order (3rd-2nd-1st). I'm not sure why, but it probably has to do with the amount of cases of those types. I prefer the more unusual cases.

Al: So what's your strategy, Brother?
Ed: I told you, a fist in his face!

Hughes: Yo, Ed! Getting it on with a girl in your hospital room?
Ed: She's just my automail mechanic!
Hughes: Ah, so you've seduced your mechanic? Not bad, midget.

I also have to go with the howdoneit case myself. I see very few of them tho, but it is always kind of nice to know the who and just figure out the how.

The "Adventure" Cases (or mystery-cases like you called them).

Breaking riddles and codes, following hints to a secret location, stopping notorious thieves in white from stealing a valuable gem, preventing an assassination plot of a mysterious black organization... these case can be fun, tense or tricky, all at the same time.
The DB as the main actors, or the progression of the Detective Conan storyline is also a huge bonus.

My favorites are the who&howdunnit combination cases. The Gray Planner is a great example of a case where it is tricky to figure out how the crime was committed and who did it. I also like the open ended ones like (highlight for the manga spoiler) the bank heist case or the gold hunt case.
Least favorite type of case: wordplay ones.

This one. It gives me thrill.

The "open mystery" cases have a great advantage in their degree of unpredictability. The other kinds are more confined.

I'd have to say the howdunits.  Though I do like codes and dying messages that people who don't know Japanese can figure out.
