I'm really quite curious about this, and it doesn't seem to have been mentioned in either of the threads about the Lupin vs. Conan special I've found so far here.

Whose idea was the special? Did it originate with Monkey Punch or Aoyama? Or the production staffs of the Lupin or Conan anime? Has anything been written about it anywhere?

I have little doubt there must have been articles about it in various Japanese anime or manga magazines. But since I don't read Japanese and hence don't follow those magazines, the only way I could find out would be if someone who did posted here. I figure it's a long shot, but I don't have any chance at all of finding out if I don't ask.

I don't know. It might have come from Monkey Punch, though, since all Lupin III does at the moment is yearly TV specials in the summer. It probably came up as their idea when working on the 2009 summer special.

It would be nice if someone could translate the Japanese wikipedia entry on the special into the American page.

It was the brainchild of the Conan & Lupin producers at NTV & YTV. Gosho & Monkey Punch just wrote off on it, apparently, and apparently Monkey Punch and Gosho both did Lupin & Conan drawings for that one Shounen Sunday cover.
