I think he always plans to end the series at one point (like Clash of Red and Black, Vermouth arc, etc) In every BO arc it seems he's ready to end the series. When in reality, DC is going to go on for another 10 more volumes or so before he finally decides to reach his conclusion. I think Goshyo is really trying to decide how many BO characters he wants to introduce before introducing "that person" or the boss. I also think he's contemplating what to do with certain characters in the end that are sort of "refugees" with nowhere to go, and no hopes for a happy ending (like Akai, Haibara Ai, Vermouth could become one, so could Okiya who might be part of the BO, etc) I doubt Goshyo wants those individuals to meet a "BO ending" of prison or death......I think Akai and Haibara's fate is the most unsure.....The more characters he has to complete the longer the series will continue. There are still questions left unanswered....

Spoiler:
the boss number, the organization's motive, haibara's past, and it seems that there are other tapes that really contains the organization's secrets (ai's reaction to her mother tape), the fbi, shinichi's identity was revealed by vermouth
you know what? when i read the manga(vol42=ep 345)i was sure gosho would end DC! there was so many things revealed that i though it was enough to meet the boss and destroy the BO(even more when he introduced FBI)!
and i'm not the only one who thought like that!

Ocelot agrees and thinks that Gosho has a gun to his head every day while writing manga.

He also thinks 9/11 was actually caused by Bush/aliens/bigfoot/whatever.

But anyway, the Shuichi and Akemi stuff is enough proof for me that it was supposed to continue for a while. And it would be unusual for everything to be revealed that quickly considering the pacing of the story since Jodie was introduced (which was years before we got even close to 345).

also i'm glad DBZ didn't end with Frieza since that would have been one hell of a terrible way to end a series. (like 21st Century boys terrible, if not worse)
