So does that mean it takes place in 1984? But it doesn't make sense because there is stuff that are not from the 80s in DC. Really curious since in one of the latest episodes detective conan mentions it has only been a couple months since the incident.

In the earlier episodes, I could've sworn I saw the current year mentioned (which was in the 90s) but I just couldn't find the scene. However, it seems that the characters don't really age since Conan and Ran are still in the same grade in 2001 (1931+70) as evidenced in episode 263.
I just ignore how many years have passed and just think that it's all happening in the same year.

yeah..I think it's best just to ignore times, since apparently a year hasn't even passed yet because no one has aged!

I know I believe one of the times was the two mix episodes 81 and 82 I believe. Tho it is to late over here right now to pull out the episode to check.

ps: I also think it all happens in the same year and they just get tech upgrades really fast

A little bit of time HAS passed, since Shinichi has had a birthday but Ran hasn't had hers yet. Times in DC are really weird and it's best to just ignore it as much as you can. They've had a couple Christmases, New Years and I believe a couple Valentine's Days, but only one birthday. And Conan keeps getting sick, he's must be the most unhealthy kid ever!

But it's still funny that Ran is still in the same grade. And I really don't think she'd be waiting for Shinichi for a year, forget OVA9.

But silly me, this doesn't answer your question. Sorry. :< I'm assuming it's the early 90s, because that's when it was first published ('94).

Obviously DC takes always place in the current year of the published chapter , so chapter 700 is in 2009.

Conan's story stays within 1 year, we won't see DB in second grade etc.

Yeah, it appears that way. That's the explanation I wanted to give but it seemed to be contradictory, but that's how the time works in DC.

Sorry, but him saying it in the preview for the next episode is far from proof.  In fact, based on the episode numbers, that seems to be the amount of time passed in real time.  Early January 1996 to late February 1997.

This.  There's evidence throughout the series that it takes place in various years.  Of the top of my head, there's 1996, 1998, 2006, and 2008, I believe.

Yeah, but they haven't aged. If Conan was 7 in 1996 then he'd be 19 or 20 right now.
