How will one case in Vol. 39 work in the Enligsh magna?

There's one thing I realized earlier and I just wonder how Viz will handle it when they get to Volume 39 of the books:

In the English version of the magna, in addition to being given a name change, Ai is always called by he dub first name instead of her last.And the "Torn Friendship" case in the aforementioned book has a subplot of Ayumi trying to say Haibara's first name, so I wonder how that story is going to work when they get to that point.

In the Finnish manga, Ai is often called Haibara, but still she is called more often by her first name. In that particular case, Ayumi tried calling her something along 'my little Ai', or something similar, I can't remember properly because I read that quite a long time ago. At least it was something quite lame and didn't sound realistic at all, in my opinion... But I'm sure it was a quite hard chapter to translate. I hope the English version doesn't screw it up!

Be interesting to see what they do with that.
Changed names are likely to create all sorts of problems later on, as we get into the occasional case where the actual name matters. More so than the story in v39 that you mentioned, it will be a problem when they reach v53 chapters 5&6 (1st Year, Class B, Great Challenge) where the spelling (kana) of the kids' names are actually of vital importance to solving the code. Of course, it'll also be even more of a challenge because English doesn't have a word-game like shiritori...

Not to mention all those Japanese centric cases, I know in most languages DC takes place in Japan and they just leave it, but Case Closed takes place in America...

That's just for the anime. The manga clearly says Conan's in Tokyo and Heiji's (not calling him the name Viz gave him) in Osaka.

Nah, they wouldn't do such a thing. The worst kind of edit that you'd really ever find in recent Viz releases are the kind that pertain to editing a picture to make it less bloody or something of that sort (which are harder to find nowadays).

They'll probably just gliss over it, if they can't pick a better line

Wait, this could be a golden opportunity. Instead of trying to call Haibara by her first name, since they already do, Ayumi could try to give her a nickname. Now... what sort of nickname could Anita have? Ai, perhaps?
