New to Detective Conan.

I've recently taken an interest in Detective Conan, but as I'm sure many of you know it's a bit of a daunting undertaking. The series is so massive and also so... incomplete in its translation that I don't really know where to start. I bought the Funimation boxed set some years back when it was first released, so I saw the first four episodes as well as (if I recall correctly) some episodes that were from later in the series, but I kind of fell out of touch with the series. I've spent a few hours searching for some kind of episode guide or viewer's guide to give me an idea of where I should start, which episodes I should see (similar to the arc system I've seen on this very site, but hopefully dating back to older episodes as well) to get the most out of the plot, character introductions, etc, but I've had little luck.
I suppose, I'm asking if anyone out there could help me in getting into Detective Conan from the start and appropriately navigating the important plot-oriented and character-driven episodes of the series. Surely I'd enjoy watching all of it, but 530+ episodes, tons of movies and specials.. I doubt I'd have the time (or means) to watch or buy/acquire all of it. I thank you in advance and apologize if such a request is too tall of an order.

I started with the manga which isn't such a bad way to go in my opinion because you can go through it faster than the anime. If you would rather go through DC by anime, then it's important to note that the anime fouls up two important-to-the-plot episodes (creating plotholes) which could prove confusing later. I highly suggest you read the manga chapters for those episodes in addition to just watching them. Those episodes are:
Episode 5: (The Shinkansen's Bomb Case) which equals Volume 4 Chapters 4-6 / Chapters 33-35
Episode 13: (The Strange Person Hunt Murder Case) which equals Volume 2 Chapters 4-7 / Chapters 13-16
Episode 13 created a serious plothole so they had to redo it as Episode 128. After you see episode 13 you may want to skip ahead and watch ep 128. Because you are starting out I don't want to spoil why those episodes created plotholes. Post again after you watch them if you are still confused.

i suggest, even if you prefer manga over anime, to watch the anime from the start then switch back to the manga at around chapter 100.
like Chek said, read those manga chapters but the first 100 chapters of DC was like 'Gosho's character development stage', i find that the anime is more well drawn compared to the first 100 chapters.

I think Conan is great for pure enjoyment...I would highly suggest you watch them in order of available episodes. The following link that I provide is a very helpful and pretty much complete info website about Conan:
http://www.geocities.com/miyanosama/
The "episode link" at the lower left hand side of the menu bar (open with Adobe Acrobat) is a complete list of episodes from 1 to 511 (DCTP is subbed up to 526) with info on titles, fansubbing groups, related manga chapters. Note that since the list was last updated September last year, and since DCTP and other groups have updated some episodes, that the entire list is not complete.
If you would like to download the videos to watch them (usually 30 minute download per video for avg. speed of 150 kb/sec), this following link may be of use to you. TheQuyen is part of the DCTP forum community, and is staff member, I believe (don't take my word for it!). He is excellent:
viewtopic.php?t=710.0
I hope this helps. Please feel free to 'ring a bell' if you need any more assistance.

While I haven't had a chance to look at any of the links provided so far, I really wanted to offer my thanks for the responses. I'm not usually a forum frequenter as I've found many of them to elicit a plethora of negative responses (especially when people ask questions), so I thank you for making me feel welcome from the start and being so helpful. Now, off I go to peer at these links and check out some of the anime/manga!
Thanks again!

Here is my suggestion... If you do these in order, you will not be disappointed or confused in anyway, but maybe slightly angry.
First thing you must understand is that the anime, is not written by Gosho Aoyama, but is merely based off of his manga. So there are discrepancies within the anime that could have been avoidable if the anime people hadn't been such douches and looked so shallow into the future of this series. (I surmise they didn't expect it to be as popular as it did, so they changed some things so that it could end sooner in case it failed.)
That being said here are my personal instructions.... with subsequent reasons...
1) Head over to onemanga.com, a torrent site, or what ever method you so choose to read the manga FIRST. Read that until the time you meet a particular character named "Miyano Shiho" also known as "Haibara Ai." Make sure to finish the case where she is introduced. Also, though the Viz version is nicely translated, it has a fatal flaw, for this reason I suggest getting the scanlations, but PLEASE consider buying them, as we all want to see this great series spread.
Reason: This is the TRUE beginning of Detective Conan. Before this point there are discrepancies in the anime story. I told you to use scanlations instead of Viz, only because Viz is apparently anti-alcohol, and removed all alcoholic references from Detective Conan, which makes a severe problem when you are here on the forums.
2) Once you have completed that task, congratulations, you are now permitted to watch the anime. As fun as it is reading, its always a trip to see how its put into action in the anime (or even TV or video if you are reading mystery books) But I beg you, try not to go past the episode you left off at in the manga.
Reason: fairly simple, by this point watching the anime will have no effect on the story. But you should always try to maintain ahead of the manga, as it IS the creators work, and the anime is just a rewriting.
3) Work hard to catch up. Again, I stress trying to catch up in the manga first. It is quicker and more accurate than the anime.
Now... If you feel more intrigued by the anime than the manga, so be it. At episode 129 (my requested point of switching) you may continue watching the anime and leave the manga, but I advise against it. I hope you enjoy this series, and if you follow my plan, you will probably enjoy it more.
I should probably explain what I meant earlier... The anime cuts out pertinent story information that leaves plot holes. I don't wish this upon anyone, so watching the anime first is very unwise.
I hope this helps, and good luck.
Ah right, one last thing. You may be inclined to watch only story related arcs, which is fine, but again, do step one FIRST. Then goto any site, and watch or read only the story related cases if you so choose to get up to speed on the story so as you can discuss things with the members of this forum.

Yes it is... I'm sure you figured out the plot hole of Conan magically learning Gin and Vodka's names >_>...
To fix that, please read
http://www.onemanga.com/Detective_Conan/33/01/ That case. Really its the only way... The anime screwed up bigtime there.

Yes, those episodes listed by that guide comprise most of the story arc. That list misses out on the romance series and the introduction of the police officers, but if you are only interested in major plot episodes that list is fine. Someone should make a mirror of the site because geocities will close down sometime this year according to current news.
