Sure it was. It alone was the reason I found out about Conan, and I'm sure alot of other people here too.

I despise Dubs with a passion, but I'm going to reasonable and say that I may have been able to deal with it had they not changed the names. Though, this is considering that I don't watch television, so I don't come across dubs on the regular anyhow to be exposed to a new series.

The Dub airing on Adult Swim is the main reason a lot of us are here. Although I don't watch the dubbed versions, it is still the root of much of the DC fan base.

I thought it was a pretty good idea, seeing as a good portion of DC's fanbase was introduced through the dub (including me), despite it not doing so well. As for names, the changes were disappointing, but not incredibly fatal. Other than that and some botches with Japanese-related clues (inevitable, really), the dub stays fairly true to the original.
Even if it didn't get much popularity, a little bit of exposure still counts for something.

Dub was fine. I don't give a damn about name chanes, as long as the plot is intact I have no problem with dubs. While to voice acting was mediocre it was by no means awful. And of course, it's the reason I'm here right now.

Like most of the people here, I started watching DC thru the dub episodes, and even though I think the English Dubs "destroy" the mysteries and sometimes the plot itself, I understand the dubbers POV.
Funimation started dubbing DC because of its popularity, but they can't just use the Japanese related cases (like with Japanese puns and places) and expect an American audience to like it, so they made it more "Western" with American names and weird solutions to cases (Ex. Movie 2 dubbed).

Actually, it wasn't Funimation that changed the names. They wanted to keep them the same (look at pretty much every other show they release). It was TMS that forced the name change, which is why they're also changed in the manga. Due to this, some cases had to be changed (like Movie 2).
Most of the cases that I can think of outside of that though are the same. The only one I can remember with a different outcome isn't even that different. It was the one where the girl is being stalked and poisons the guy before he can kill her. In one version (dub I think), Conan (via Kogoro) tells her to just serve her time, be released, and then pursue her dream of opening a bakery or whatever. In the other version, Conan (via Kogoro) tells her that even though she was being threatened, murder is never an option, and must now spend her young life behind bars.

I seriously think changing the names was a bit on the bad side but other than that
the dubbing was okay to me :] i mean, even though adult swim aired like..up to 50 episodes, it was an okay--long awaited thriller when i got home from work

to watch something so interesting ;]

Oh, so that's who started the name changes.

Thanks for clarifying.
I remembered this one case that had to do with shogi(it was at the end of Volume 10), but instead of using the Japanese name and shogi piece to incriminate the person, it was dubbed as a knight in a corner, and they came up with a chess saying that i had no idea anybody used; "A knight in the corner makes you a mourner, having access to only 2 squares."(I actually looked it up on my old VHS, and had to hear it several times to get it right

) I thought that was horrible, and to have that expression matched up to the criminal, her name was dubbed so that she had a middle name Marefield.
I know that it's hard to change the case without completely destroying the logic behind it, but using middle names and stuff that somewhat relate to victims and murderers(Movie 2) makes it impossible to solve it yourself without watching it in original Japanese or skipping ahead.

If it weren't for the dubs I might not know about DC right now. If there were no dubs I would probably find out about DC in maybe 1 or 2 years from now.
