What was the point of removing the BO from early episodes?

I mean the shinkansen case and the Akemi case. In the anime version they switched them for random criminals. Does anybody know what was the reason for that? Was there an interview with someone responsible?

They weren't expecting the series to become this popular to the point of becoming a long-running series. Since they didn't want to end the series with a lot of unresolved story, they tried to remove as much overarching plot elements as possible.

Okay, but wouldn't this apply to the manga as well? Are you trying to say that the anime creators didn't plan to animate the whole manga at that time?

Yes. You cannot guarantee success, so you always need to prepare for cancellation.
