Quirks that make you cringe

Why do the culprits always feel the urge to spout some semi-apologetic philosophical nonsense when being arrested ?

Why does Ran keep screaming whenever she sees a corpse ? it's annoying, she should be used to it by now. Even the Detective Boys don't scream as much as she does

Speaking of the DB, I'm surprised they don't show any psychological scars despite all these dead bodies they have came across

And shouldn't have Shinichi died the moment Gin hit him on the head in the very first episode ?

We have seen plenty of victims succumb in much more trivial ways

An nice alternative title for this thread would've been "Tropes that you are tired of".

They aren't really spouting philosophical stuff, they rant their motivation, which of course is apologetic, since most of the time the culprits see their actions as justified before turned around by some speech or something. At least they don't always try to commit suicide like the culprits in early Kindaichi, where it happens in every case.

You could include Sonoko and Kazuha in that statement with Ran and no, the DB are still screaming pretty much the same. It's a standard element of this sort of crime fiction and keeping a formula for your cases. For the same reason, Scully in The X-Files is still so incredibly sceptical even though she has witnessed enough to not be sceptical anymore: keeping a certain formula for character dynamics.

The corpse thing is similar to the whole jokes/arguments about the floating timeline. Yes, a single corpse in real life could traumatize a person, let alone a child. Okay, but for a fictional series, would it be fun or even a good idea to have most of your regular characters be constantly traumatized and have PTSD and have them be in therapy and all that stuff? No, no it wouldn't.

Last one is the typical fictional approach to head injuries. Shiratori should've been dead after his last appearance in the old warehouse case (or at least have severe brain damage), but alas, he won't be. Shinichi would probably be dead without hospital treatment in real life, but he isn't, because he is a regular character. Simple as that.

Btw, I'd recommend you never watch House. The show has even more regular tropes and formulaicness than DC and would probably annoy you very fast.

Well, guess who's not exactly a fan of his...

You mean me? I don't particularly care about Shiratori, but I don't want him dead or anything.

"But alas, he won't be."

That gave me the impression that you did—but given your response, this is likely a misunderstanding on my part.

You writing "alas, he won't be [dead]" in your post just gave me the impression that you'd prefer that he'd died.

I suppose the "alas" part was just about Gosho not portraying the effects of head injuries realistically, right?

Yes, it was, but I see that I didn't use it in the clearest way possible.
(btw, I don't mind it that much either, since it's not just a Gosho thing, head injuries in fiction are not represented properly anywhere, but I can never quite shake off that first impression of "Yeah, he should be dead/have brain damage".)

Well, it certainly would shock us if Gosho actually did that and killed him off, for the sake of realism.

I heard it was also a matter of how long one is unconscious after being knocked out.

The strange phenomenon where Ran and Kazuha both experience a 10-point drop in IQ when they're together.
It'd be good if, to rectify this, Gosho wrote a story where something bad happened to Conan and Heiji, and so Ran and Kazuha had to work together to solve it.

Genta being reduced to "fat kid" and the entire Chiba love story are ACTUAL cringe worthy elements of the series.

Yeah, it makes them seem like they're there just for the sake of being there, for instance.

I could probably count the number of Gosho cases I actively dislike on like one hand. (at the very least I certainly I wouldn't need more than two). It made for 2 of them, both specifically because that was the focus. Gosho has been consistently making cases since 1994.

It just sucks. Objectively. Factually. Scientifically.

I think it's too late for that. A single case won't make them look more inteligent. But yeah, I agree with you. Despite how much I dislike Ran, I must admit that sometimes (usually by mistake) she's helpful. But when she's with Kazuha, they both turn into sweet idiots that are afraid of anything and everything. And to think that they're both martial artists...

"Fat stupid kid". His behaviour isn'y even funny anymore. And he's more stupid than fat. I'm just glad that in the recent cases he stopped mentioning that he's hungry, everything reminds him of an eel, and generally he would want to eat. Anything.

A few things.

1. Nobody recurring ever dying makes the Org. cases lose a lot of their tension and the only people who have killed Org. members have been other Org. members. Makes them look incompetent as all hell, especially since most random murder of the week people can at least kill their intended victims. They come across as their own worst enemy.
2. Pretty much everyone blindly trusting Conan all the time. This is why I find Mary so refreshing- she doesn't trust him.
3. The FBI after a certain point seem to have thrown the rulebook out regarding jurisdiction. No wonder Rei's annoyed.
4. The case where the guy tried murdering his wife because she was acting rude due to pregnancy, then Conan just letting him go. Nothing like attempted homicide to form a stable home. ::)

Oh gosh, that one.... she's so creepy! Like psycho-stalker creepy. If he disappears from the story - she's the culprit. She'll have him hogtied in her basement.

Conan: Your punishment for trying to murder your pregnant wife is... being a parent! That'll teach you!

My pet peeves:
  1. 3 suspects.
  2. No one knows how to handle evidence properly. Especially Shinichi. Evidence is most useful when it is recorded before it is disturbed. Random wire a 6 year old claims was found in the room during the big suspect reveal? Not exactly compelling evidence. Half the time, I imagine a real investigator would suspect Kogorou of planting evidence in order to frame a suspect, and giving it to the little kid who hangs on his every word to "find."
  3. No one knows how to talk to child witnesses, and they never call in experts in dealing with child witnesses. There's a lot of strict protocols in place for interrogating children, and they're never mentioned or followed in the slightest.
  4. Kogorou knocking Conan around.
There's more to my list, but this is enough for now.
