What are DC's 'big' cases in your opinion ?

Post by MrDetective »

I'm takling about memorable cases with interesting characters, a lot of twists and astute tricks

they are not necessarily plot-related, and not all 4 and more chapter-cases qualify

for example I can think of the Halloween boat case, the Shinigami case, Mountain Villa Bandaged Man case, the Spider mansion case

the Fire Hound case and the recent Vampire case are semi-big cases for me

can you name others ?

The first one that comes off my head is the "20 years revenge SS Symphony" (Ep 174).

The tricks employed were surprising and even Conan and Heji disagreed on their deductions.

I was also nervous wondering what'd become of Heiji but he turned out to be alright, fortunately enough.

I agree with all of those but the two that always come to mind are Night Baron and Furinkazan for favorites.

Also, Moonlight Sonata of course.

Another memorable one for me was the mansion case, with the giant chess pieces in the garden and the crazy old lady

Haibara was in it too, I can't remember the name of that case

Moonlight Sonata, Spider mansion case, Mountain Villa Bandaged Man Murder Case...

hmm... I liked the desperate revival arc but the cases weren't that much... there's the mermaid case, Two Mysteries of the Night of the Full Moon (Vermouth is my favorite and of course this is a favorite of mine as well)

red woman and demon dog and Kamaitachi and Kawanakajima were good I guess but not better than the earlier cases in the series and the fact I'm not a kid anymore and I can solve or get close to solving the cases makes the one's I watched as a kid look more epic to me... this is a hard question for me I guess :P
Thanks for the SS Kamite! ;D

The Old Blue Castle Investigation Case.

Definitely Kogoro's class reunion but I agree with Moonlight Sonata - and I'd add the Stradivarius dissonance case (one of the very occasional cases that I had been able to solve before Conan)

Moonlight Sonata, Kiritengu, Spider Mansion, Locked Bathroom, Magic Lovers Club, Night Baron, Butsumetsu, A Course Without Protest and The Final Screening are among my favorites, regular case wise.

For me is when heiji invited shinichi to osaka for the first time. Oh ran and conan met kazuha for the first time too. It was the driver licence murder.

The next case is holmes fans club murder, and the murder in the sky where shinichi solved his first official case. Sorry i don't know the english title but if you are die hard fans of conan you would know that. :)

Fuurinkazan is brilliant. And so is... damn, you have already said all of them and the rest are BO cases...

I took the time to go through all 277 cases that were created by Aoyama until File 962 and would classify the following ones as ‘big’:
  • Case 7: The Hatamoto Family
    Case 12: Bandaged Man Case
    Case 18: Piano Sonata Case
    Case 24: Heiress Murder Case
    Case 33: Holmes Freak Case
    Case 54: Stabbed Wallet Case
    Case 59: Shinichi’s First Case
Case 65: Cruise Ship Murder Case
    Case 80: Mermaid’s Curse Case
Case 86: Kaitou Kid and the Murder
    Case 92: Tiger Scroll Case
    Case 102: Golden Apple Case
    Case 105: Mysterious Words Case
    Case 107: Serial Bomber Case
    Case 114: Red Horse Case
    Case 129: Koshien Bomber Case
    Case 136: Stradivarius Murder Case
    Case 140: Magician Murder Case
    Case 142: Butsumetsu Murder Case
    Case 163: Detective Koshien Case
    Case 178: Furinkazan Case
Case 188: Murderer Shinichi Kudo Case
    Case 199: Red Wall Case
Case 215: Demon Dog Murder Case
    Case 217: Following Holmes
    Case 224: Bomber’s Request
    Case 233: Overnight Deadline
    Case 237: Mystery Train
    Case 241: Vampire’s Mansion
Case 252: The Red Woman Murder Case
    Case 264: Kawanakajima Murder Case
Case 269: Zombie Movie Murder Case
Case 277: Curse of the Nue
As expected, the selection is dominated by cases that took four chapters or more—specially by the longer ones with Heiji—, and since the plot-related chapters rarely have ‘big’ cases, most of them aren’t included. While there are also quite a few three-chapter cases which are memorable because they are funny, strange or unusual, it just doesn’t seem right to put them on the same list as the ones above since they altogether don’t deserve to be in a compilation of ‘big’ cases of a series that has been going on for over twenty years.

This is probably what I’d recommend to someone who’s interested in reading good detective stories. For plot-related stuff, see the Treasured Selection.

I L O V E DC but after 800 episodes or so, a lot of cases become very very repetitive in my opinion, for instance locked room cases felt a bit overkill after a while and I've always wondered why it's always the same story with murderers? It's always a regretful fall on the knees and it's almost always jealousy, revenge or misunderstandings (or all three) and for some reason I've rarely seen any accomplices? Only one culprit, as far as I can remember. Bear in mind I've only reached episode 622 so far so I can't speak for the latter episodes.

Either way, some of my favourite and most memorable cases are:
Moonlight sonata murder case
Missing corpse murder case
Mountain villa bandaged man murder case
Monday night 7:30 pm murder case
Conan Edogawa kidnapping case
The locked bathroom murder case
And then there were no mermaids
The red horse within the flames
The dissonance of the stradivarius

and three cases whom I can't seem to remember or find the names of: Kogoros class reuinion, the masks case in the villa where they could only enter from each side etc and the ship case where a young man disappeared and everyone thought he was the culprit but it was someone else really.

If you watch all the AO, it will become way repetitive because they are just the poor version of Gosho's work, some AOs are outstanding though. About locked room murder cases, they are still the most common theme in detective fictions. Kindaichi is even much much more focused on lock-room murders. At least in DC, we have kidnapping cases, code-cracking cases, robbery cases, bomb cases, some "slice-of-life" cases and BO cases.
