I am aiming this question mainly at the translators but if you know the answer just tell me! It annoys me to no end when I am writing up a little fanfic, that I am not sure on how to spell my favorite character's name (other then Wataru)

yeah i think so.. because in manga the story about the hammer man.. takagi and sato are in stake out and in the end takagi wants to be partnered with sato in stake out but he misheard what does the chief said and in the end of manga its not what he think about..

I don´t know, but for me? I prefer Sato.

It's Satou for me. I've using it for all my fanfics and I intend to keep using it.

I'm used to Satou, but both are okay.  This reminds me of the Kudo Kudou thing again.  Both don't matter I guess...

It matters if it's Kaito Kaitou though because people use that to distinguish between Kaito Kuroba and Kaitou KID.

I'd use the macron if I had a keyboard that made it easy. I'm still trying to wean myself off of wapuro Romanization, but I can't bring myself to spell "Mouri" as "Mori". ETA: Heh, but I typically go with "Sato" now.

Ditto regarding the macron. I am surprised at how evenly split the poll is right now (5-5). Sato vs Satou is even more controversial then Ran vs. Ai. Here is a list of potential long vowel romanizations for main and recurring characters. I bolded the ones I use pretty much exclusively and the italicized the ones are where I am inconsistent. Which spellings do the rest of you prefer?
Sato/Satou
Kudo/Kudou
Mori/Mouri
Shuichi/Shuuichi
Hondo/Hondou (Eisuke's family name)
Juzo/Juuzo/Juzou/Juuzou (Megure's given name)
Kogoro/Kogorou
Nakamori/Nakamouri Corrected per Nyarl below. I didn't look up the hiragana for this one.
Yusaku/Yuusaku
Toyama/Tooyama (Kazuha's family name)
Ninzaburo/Ninzaburou (Shiratori's given name)
Heizo/Heizou (Hattori's father's given name)
Otaki/Ootaki (Osaka police officer)
Ginzo/Ginzou (Nakamori/Nakamouri's given name)
Kaito/Kaitou (It seems like Kaito is used for Kuroba where Kaitou is used for Kid as Kirite mentioned)

You should just have the link on your signature pheonix <3.  Plus some artist are iffy about that and might take their site down if they think their art is stolen.  She doesn't seem like the type who would do that though .

How do you guys type the accent on top of the o in Sato?  I never know how to do that quicky ^^;.
