From manga to anime: Adaptation Glitches. (Old spoilers)

For the most part, the anime version of Detective Conan doesn't deviate from it's manga counterpart.

But when it does, it's bound to have some hiccups here and there. Lets start with getting the big one out of the way.

Early one, several stories in the manga tied into the Organization, but once adapted into the anime, were altered to be more standalone:

- Episode 5: The Shinkansen's Bomb Case: Instead of encountering the two men in black who poisoned him, and learning of their codenames, Conan merely encounters their doppergangers. Both of whom happen to wear black, share the same physical features and has an interest in criminal activities.

- Episode 12: The Strange Person Hunt Murder Case: Gin and Vodka's role in the story is replaced by a generic criminal Okita, Akemi lives in the end and Conan doesn't learn of the existence of a secret criminal organization. Incidentally the story actually predated Episode 5 in the manga.

Now as often discussed, the latter was a set up for the appearance of Shiho Miyano/Ai Haibara, so Episode 128 "The Black Organization: One Billion Yen Robbery Case" was made for the sake of repairing the altered plot. So no harm no fowl, right?

Well Episode 54 "Game Company Murder Case" was actually adapted with no changes made, yet it really doesn't work at this point for the anime as:
A. Episode 5 removed Gin & Vodka, and thus omitted Conan learning their codenames. Yet, Episode 54 has him referring to them fully aware of their codenames.

B. Episode 12 also removed Gin & Vodka, as well as Conan learning that the two men are part of a criminal organization. Yet he displays knowledge of The Organization in Episode 54.

Oops.


That said, the order of a story has been switched around sometimes without any problem, though the occasional slip ups do occur. And while they don't do any damage in the story, what other glitches have you noticed?

A couple come to mind for me:
1. Episode 34-35: Mountain Villa Bandaged Man Murder Case Part 1-2: In the manga, this is Sonoko's first appearance in the story, as well as this being the first time she meets Conan (And for a side note, her first anime appearance in Episode 6 "Valentine Murder Case" suggests that she met Conan offscreen).

This is also the first time that Conan solves a murder case through Sonoko, though she was the second choice as he was originally going to solve the murder through Ran. In the anime, however, he already solved the mystery in Episode 18 "A June Bride Murder Case" with her, which does bring into question why he doesn't make her the immediate choice in this story as well.

2. Episode 38: Akaoni Village Fire Festival Murder Case: Conan manages to get a confession out of the murderer near the end of the episode, but said murderer doesn't really care to surrender just cause his plans were revealed, so Conan has to stop him. Eventually after struggling, he does use his Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes.

But surely his Stun-Gun Wristwatch would have been just as handy, right? Well this story actually predate the appearance of that particular invention, which incidentally made it's debut in the manga version of Episode 22-23 "Luxury Liner Serial Murder Case" Part 1-2. But it's anime debut was much earlier in the "Valentine Murder Case".

Still there are times when Conan does seem to prefer using the shoes over the wristwatch, but might as well bring it up nonetheless.


So, any other continuity errors as a result of adapting the manga differently?

Yes I'm aware. Made some edits myself, but I figured this would make for a good topic.

Plus, there's probably a lot of differences (or more relevantly to the thread, continuity glitches from those changes) that left that haven't been compiled onto that page.

It makes sense to prefer the shoes over the stungun wristwatch. His shoes are infinite use (they may have been damaged before?), but his stungun wristwatch is only a one-time use, then he's got to go back to whatever voodoo novelty store he buys those elephant tranquilizers from.

In my experience, even as someone who usually prefers the anime, the manga is better in the first 9 volumes because of all the changes. I mean, sometimes the pacing was much better in anime versions of cases, but otherwise the manga flows much better because of how they make it feel less status-quo-like even though it is. The anime wanted everything established ASAP while the manga at least waited a while before the Detective Boys were actually a thing and made Ran's first time being suspicious of Conan not happen ASAP (though in retrospect, I think Gosho might regret doing this story 3 times in the first 25 or so volumes ). It also has more references to cases that apparently just happened recently or they introduce things and characters and a better pace as a story and it just works better.
