Re: Why do people dislike Ran?
I used to dislike her the first days reading DC, now I don't like her but don't dislike her either. It's just personal taste, not anything special. But I admit that one thing making up that "taste" is that she cries (or tears up) too much (comparing to other characters), and another is that she's built to be just too perfect
)
Met DC by chance then about 3 hours later it scared the sh*t out of me in Spring 2001 and I ran for my life.
But boredom made me come to it once again in Winter 2004.
And I fell for it. Ever since then. Though sometimes it still frightens me like the first time

Like Shinichi/Conan? She put a fist into a wall and got jealous in those early files, just like Shinichi/Conan was more arrogant before Moonlight Sonata (File 62–File 67/Episode 11) and he still was getting jealous (in a different way) as late as File 621/Episode 508. Plus, when she's talking to Shinichi, she engages him in banter and gets annoyed/irritated/angry with him, more than any other character... Kogoro also gets that side of her, as well.Kahomi wrote:and another is that she's built to be just too perfect)

The card you're referring to is the ace of spades. Ace = 1. 1 in Japanese = ichi. Shinichi. Plus, that movie had a card theme in it.Christcc9 wrote:Spoiler:
Is it just because moments like that clash so much with scenes where you're really impressed by her? She should be able to save herself, you think, right? But who was going to save her, in that scene? The film's writer gave a reason for her being unable to (I'll get back to the writer(s), later), whether you think it was legitimate, or not.
She got Miwako shot? The guy would've shot, anyway—first, he was after Sato, in his motive to kill certain police officers, then he was trying to kill Ran, because she'd seen him (that was before she literally kicked—KICKED—his knife in half). He wasn't trying to shoot Ran, in the scene you're referring to. Would you have blamed any other girl her age?... and I'm going to come back to the idea of blame, when it comes to fictional characters. Also, Ran blamed herself for that—so much guilt that she got temporary amnesia. You have to have a lot of empathy and care to have that affect you that much. She blocked out her entire life.
But then she kicked the crap out of him—a former U.S. Navy SEAL. He may have had it rough, that night, already, but she just pulverized him.
Remember—characters do things because the writers want them to (whether they take what a certain observer sees as logical into account or not). You should be irritated at the writers, if anything. The writer of the second movie had her be too weak after nearly drowning, due to her saving Shinichi/Conan by giving him her air. The writer made that happen.

The way she's always thinking "Shinichi..?" for anything is over the top. I know she's in love very hard though.
She could have said "Shinichi's card?" you see? The fact that she only said "Shinichi" as if he was right in front of her, is tiring...
Okay she didn't get Sato shot because the culprit would have shot her anyway. My bad, let me rephrase: she has been enough stupid to take that damn flashlight and makes Miwako perceptible.DCUniverseAficionado wrote:She got Miwako shot? Spending time with Shinichi/Conan she should be brighter (PUN! Flashlight/brighter... nevermind).
Of course all this is unreal, of course writers are behind everything, of course characters are fictional, of course this is just a manga.DCUniverseAficionado wrote:Remember—characters do things because the writers want them to (whether they take what a certain observer sees as logical into account or not). But if you take it that way, this topic has no reason to exist - like a bunch on the site. I'm just giving MY reason why I don't like Ran as the OP wants, but I'm not taking it so seriously. Of course we all oughtta complain about the writer.

So it's tiring and irritating? So if she hadn't said Shinichi's name upon seeing the card, it wouldn't have exasperated you? Simply removing that line, then, is the fix for that scene?
But did she know that Miwako would then be shot in the next couple moments? I don't think so. Also, Miwako interposed her body between the murderer and Ran, like the dedicated police officer who values civilian life that she is.Christcc9 wrote:Okay she didn't get Sato shot because the culprit would have shot her anyway. Nope. See the end of my post for why...DCUniverseAficionado wrote:Simply removing that line, then, is the fix for that scene?
She was aware of the case, aware police officers (or related) was the targets (I'm not sure for this one tbh, can't remember). She could have known imo - but she hasn't and that's fair enough. It's part of the charm of the anime I guess, I don't want her to change. I've never proposed alternations because that's not what I want. From the beginning I'm just "explaining" why she upsets me, but I've said she isn't useless and can understand why people like her.
That's why when you say: "Simply removing that line is the fix for that scene?" I say no.
If you would ask me the fix for the "Miwako shot scene" e.g., I'd answer there isn't! It's fine that way. If she hadn't found the flashlight and felt guilty, she didn't get amnesia and it wouldn't have been funny.
Plus I have a totally off-topic question for you if you'd like (sorry, it's for my english enhancement LoL): you wrote "wouldn't mind seeing", would it wrong or also correct to write "wouldn't mind to see"?

I just watched it—Ran picked up the flashlight, due to the blackout, the murderer walked in, Ran didn't see him until he'd fired the first shot.
So you want to be annoyed/exasperated by her? I've never used the infinitive (to *verb*) in that way—ing is the better choice.

Re: Why do people dislike Ran?
Anyway, we've talked about it before, especially when debating on whether or not Shinichi rightfully fears that Ran will blurt out the truth and doom them all.
But would she really? At the risk of suggesting so, all suspicion arcs tended to have her slipping up at some point enough that Shinichi and company get wise to her and come up with a plan to throw her suspicion off.
The Desperate Revival was no different as Ran panicked at the idea of bathing with a child (which I believe in Japan may still be considered okay as long as it's a parent or guardian), and only confirming that she's onto him when offering to give her blood.
But, lets really look at that particular arc. Ran didn't just come up with the suspicion as she did in the past and the following arc which had Conan getting another cellphone. She's been holding onto that knowledge for quite some time in DR, a fact which Conan realizes when resting in the hospital. Yes, she actually was able to still keep her suspicions on the low to the point where up until the aforementioned scenes, Conan had no idea that she was holding onto this knowledge.
And if the manga is truly leading to a final suspicion arc where the end result is different and Ran has once again been holding onto this suspicion even as far back after the Shiragami story, then it means that she once again is keeping observation without Conan being alarmed or aware of the possible fact.

The Mystery of Conan Edogawa.
Arguably one of the best attempts at tackling the story of "Ran discovering the secret behind Conan". It's strong point is taking a common plot for Detective Conan fan fics and presenting it in a fresh manner such as:
- Touching on things that aren't dealt with in the show or discussed much.
- While there is some understanding towards Conan's predicament, the fic doesn't ignore the problematic approach he takes towards keeping quiet.
So, do yourself a favor and read this. I only wish I could so something half as decent.

I agree that Shinichi/Conan has been too fearful about that—he and the others in the know have also made potentially dangerous slips, as well.Antiyonder wrote:Anyway, we've talked about it before, especially when debating on whether or not Shinichi rightfully fears that Ran will blurt out the truth and doom them all.

He was just confused by Ran's words on the cruise liner (File 225–File 230/Episode 174), and only noticed all the hints that we, the readers had been shown, upon reflection.
Gosho's dropped many hints about her suspicions since the Bourbon arc started—it's really only a matter of time until he really confirms that she is suspicious, once we reach the story that initiates her fourth (and hopefully final) suspicion story.Antiyonder wrote:And if the manga is truly leading to a final suspicion arc where the end result is different and Ran has once again been holding onto this suspicion even as far back after the Shiragami story, then it means that she once again is keeping observation without Conan being alarmed or aware of the possible fact.

Re: Why do people dislike Ran?
I've just finished rereading the whole manga, movie 18, 19 and 2 worst day OVA so this is my first post here after long time
.
I must say though I'm beginning to dislike how they treat Ran with her constant 'Shinichi...' monologue. The worst part is in the special episode where they made Ran irrationally angry because of 'Shinichi's' weird message which resulted in her being angry until next day morning. They didn't even show anything that hints about her suspecting what's happening to Shinichi and his connection to Conan. Don't get me start with the kid movie either lol. That thing was weird as hype with how 'Shinichi' disappeared from the plane and stuffs but everyone never really suspect that he's not Shinichi after the plane bombing scene.
Personally I feel like she's a pretty strong girl mentally but she never really gets a chance to really shine like when she protected Haibara from Vermouth again, and that's what really grates me.

Re: Why do people dislike Ran?
I've honestly had many different thoughts since I wrote this but the prevailing one right now is that this isn't annoying because the female lead is being written poorly (well...ok that is annoying...but still!). It's annoying because there are quite a number of ways to improve things. And the only one Gosho has done is to slightly downplay the ShinRan stuff. "Nope, no problem here! Um...look! Ran said a thing an actual interesting character would say again!"
Which is undoubtedly an improvement.
That being said, I feel increasingly uninterested (and slightly uncomfortable) criticizing Gosho's writing because I have no idea how any writer wouldn't fail at something writing as much as he is, doing the genre he's been doing for as long as he has done it with the schedule mangaka tend to have. In retrospect, it isn't surprising Gosho's writing eventually had such issues, it's surprising it took as long as it to decline as slowly as it did.
