You talk as if most mangaka know what the hell they're doing.  Just look at Naruto and Bleach and you can tell they're just making crap up as they go.
You can say that for every single TV series.  Especially since they are written by scrambling teams of people that each want to try out a cool new idea.

One would assume/hope that the author of a detective manga would have some sort of idea of where he wants to lead us, since clues and hints and such need to be dropped in advance.

Yeah, like Lost. Season 1 and 2 totally contradict each other.

TheBlind wrote: It has become obvious that the series is still running for reasons other than itself. Maybe it's just me but the series has become stagnant and it reflects in this forum. There's not much to talk about except for the same events happening again but only with different players. It would not surprise me if Gosho's mapped out ending(and mapped out series after he past his true ending point) looks like:

Insert Black Org. event - Insert Couple Event - Insert Ran suspects Shinichi event - Insert DC boys case- Insert Kaitou kid Event- Insert Black Org. event - Insert Couple Event - Insert Ran suspects Shinichi event - etc.

and of course the series will end at the "Insert Black Org. event".

While you are pretty much correct, the fact that it is still as enjoyable as it is despite that fact almost makes that irrelevent to me.

I think we have to differentiate between those that

1.   have a planned storyline and follow it with no interruption (Hikaru no Go(ignoring book 18))
2.   have a planned storyline and follow it up while inserting fillers (DC)
3a. don't have a planned storyline but the author has no problem creating new ideas (HunterXHunter) and
3b. don't have a planned storyline and the author can't think of something new (Dragonball)
4.  don't have a planned storyline and do insert fillers (I don't read such mangas)

Perhaps you could split the second and forth group in 2a and 2b / 4a and 4b, similar like 3a and 3b.
Of course the examples above were put in the respective group by my judgement, which might be wrong, since I didn't the ask the author.

Gosho has obviously planned a story, but due to the popularity of DC at the time, he probably changed the story a lot of times. I doubt he intended to have the FBI and CIA from the begining. Now after so many years, people want some more conclusions and/or more B.O. stuff and less random cases.

I agree. I remember reading Gantz(very adult themed aka realistic violence and nudity) because it had an interesting view of what happened in the afterlife to selected individuals. It also had a good story that had you asking questions but I stopped reading it years ago because it became clear that the writer(s) had idea where they were going with it and just started introducing more(idiotic) questions and filler.

*nods*
It's clear that Aoyama-san has something planned out. I mean, what kind of making-crap-up-as-I-go author introduces someone in book 2, I believe, who is quickly killed off because she tried to do the right thing, and then have her sister introduced in book 18? (Akemi and Shiho Miyano, for those of you who haven't had your coffee yet.)
I just hope he has a solid ending planned. If he doesn't I will be highly tempted to throw something in the general direction of my local library.

There are a lot of things as yet unrevealed, such as what Ai's mother told her on the tapes, who the BO boss is, WTF Vermouth is, etc, so clearly there's some epic underlying story that will be slowly cleared up. I just wish not so slowly.
Of course, it's kind of an evil choice. You want it to end because you want to know what'll happen, but you don't want it to end because you love DC and love reading it every week... that's how I feel, anyway. :)

The crazy thing is that even if DC were to end, with all the cool characters that Gosho has created within the series, he could have a bunch of spin-offs.

Metropolitan Love Story, Kaitou Kid, Sonoko Suzuki High School Girl Detective, Conan Future Boy... oh wait...

Gosho is still having fun writing about all his amazing characters, and while his original vision for DC may have grown over the years, I have no doubt in mind that he has an ending all mapped out.

But until the publisher tells Gosho to wrap up the series because no one is reading it, he'll have no reason to stop his fun prematurely. So he'll keep us on hook for years, decades if possible, forever if necessary. Forever...

... He's a sadist! :'(

hell, one of those already has a spin-off despite being created years before DC started.

You're too optimistic...
I don't think we will see the ending of DC in our whole life...

JK

Since most of us are younger than Gosho (46), we will all see it (if we don't die an unnatural death). And it will probably happen in the next 15 years, because when you get much older than sixty, drawing a comic gets really difficult...

He has already done the ending in case something happens to him...
Or at least I read so somewhere in this forum...
