I think living by yourself + with a crap-load of mulah...with the right amount of discipline, would be a fine life really.

I don't really think yukiko/yusaku are that bad of parents, they just have their own parenting style, its so the child becomes independent and can experience reality at a younger age to "toughen" yourself up.

Plus his parents are adorable. lol.

My parents brought me up in somewhat similar way (not as extreme as just ditching their kid when their 13 to live the life of luxury lol), so....thats just my two cents.

HOWEVER, Kogoro after the divorce is a crappy-ass parent.  There's nothing worse than having a drunk parent, and needing to take care of him/her everyday :(  But Kogoro is still a boss.  Much love Sleeping Kogoro.

I wouldn't say that Heiji's or Shinichi's or Ran's or Kazuha's parents are all that bad.

Heiji: His parents obviously care about him, but, his father does seem to be very busy (typical for Japan, right? lol)

Shinichi: His parents seem to trust him.  For all we know, Shinichi probably chose to stay in Japan, besides, Professor Agasa is right next door, so they probably felt that he could check up on Shinichi.  Besides, it seems to be legal for teens to live alone, just as long as someone is paying for the place of residence.  Q.E.D. is another series where the main character lives alone and is only a teenager (he's just in an apartment, though).  Makoto (Sailor Jupiter) of Sailor Moon also lived alone.  They never explained that one, especially since her parents were dead.  Mamoru (of Sailor Moon) lived by himself as well.

Ran: Kogoro cares a lot about Ran.  So he gambles and drinks, he never once showed he didn't worry or not care about Ran's welfare and safety.  I know some complained that Ran has to do all the cleaning and cooking and stuff, but I think some are forgetting that this is Japan.  It's pretty much the stereotypical role for the female of the home to do all of that.  Ran is technically the "lady of the house".  If anything, this is normal.  As for Eri, she may work a lot, but I always felt it was implied that Ran still spent time with her or would do most anything for her.  The fact that she'd come right over whenever Ran needed her shows that.

Kazuha: Well...not sure of her mother, so can't say.  Can't say much about her father either, aside from his being a busy worker like Heiji's father.

The only sets of parents I have a slight problem with are those of the Detective Boys.  I find it odd that they let them hang with Professor Agasa all the time.  Taking them on camping trips, taking them out to eat, taking them to soccer matches, sometimes spending money on them, etc.  It's just odd to me that Agasa is more of a parent to these kids than their parents are and how uninformed could they be not to realize that Conan is sometimes involved with murder investigations?  I'm pretty sure Conan's made the news (well, the paper) a few times.  I wouldn't want my child hanging around someone that seems to attract death.

My biggest problems with DC parents (at least with Ran's and Shinichi's) is the fact that they married when they were very young and as it seems, they gave birth to their children at the same year that they married.

When Yukiku was 20 she got married and gave birth to Shincihi. Now that he is 17, she is 37. When I was 17, my mom was 50. I don't say that my mom is the perfect model to "when you should first have a baby" but a 20 years old woman can't really be ready for a baby. She needs to get high education and be sure that she can actually have money for a baby. With Yukiku it wasn't really a problem, since her husband was an auther/detective and she was a famous actress. But Eri needed to learn first how to be a good lawyer. When did she and Kogoro have the time to take care of Ran exactly?

In my point of view, of Ran´s parents, I think that although Kogoro is always lazy, watching Yoko-chan, drinkink beer and playing Mahjong up late, he loves Ran, because in some episodes when Ran is in danger he always had to get to her even if he could get hurt or being killed. I can´t say anything about Eri because there aren´t many episodes invloving Ran-Eri relationship but, I think she loves her also because of the fact that in
Spoiler:
Movie 4 Captured in her eys, she was really preocupied when Ran was uncious and when she lost her memory.
. About the 20 year-old marriage, I can´t say anything neither, beacause we really don´t know what happened in Ran´s childhood.
Now, Shinihi-his parents realationship. Not much to say, not many epiodes with Yusaku and Yukiko, but it can be sai that Yusaku and Yukiko don´t love Shinichi beacause thay are always travelling and don´t get worried about Shinichi´s life. However there are some episodes saying that there is also some love:
Spoiler:
The Edogawa Conan Kidnnaping case, it shows that Yusaku and Yukiko really want to help Shinichi but because of his ego and pride of a Detective, he refused the help. And in an episode where Shinichi´s parents desgise as two old men, when Shinichi was "shot" thay inmediately ran to see him and Yukiko showed that he loved Shinichi up tyo an extreme point.
Thay 20 year-old marriage, nothing to say. Well, not counting the two parts episode od Shinichi and Ran Childhhood adventure, because it doesn´t show any realtionship. Who knows, maybe Gosho will come up with episodes relating to REAL Shinichi and Ran childhood and the realtionship with thier respective parents.

Note that this is my point of view, if anyone wants to say anything against it, feel free.

I wouldn't have left IN THE FIRST PLACE knowing he tends to stick his nose in cases that are dangerous....and if I had to leave, I would have taken him with me from the beginning. Ran has sense enough to know he tends to follow dangerous men down dark alleyways from the beginning. His parents probably knew it too before the incident even happened...and yet, they let him live on his own..... ???
They care to some degree about Shinichi, but they are careless parents, letting many things go by without addressing it when it comes to Shinichi.
If they would care more their child wouldn't be able to make decisions on it's own but would always tend to the help of others - which personally I don't think is the best way of raising a child
as I said before I'm sure they left Shinichi alone because Agasa was their neighbour and Ran would look after him, so no problem in that.Enough money was left there...
as for why they left him alone even after he was shrunk I guess they knew he would still come after the BO even if they DID take him to the USA so it wouldn't really solve anything and they knew he was in good care.
besides if they can trust Shinichi(which they can),there's not really a problem of leaving him alome,he ALWAYS took care of his problems and came for help if he needed and he would surely do the same now
AND it would ruin the plot XD
