Reviving this solely to remind myself of actual thought put into why a thing in a series isn't working before the stupidity and lack of thought from other people causes me to go into unstoppable rage mode. ughhhh

if anyone ever tells you a series you like is "the worst" just because it has issues, cut ties with them for the sake of your intelligence. If not for your sake, for mine at least.

To slider: Do you also, felt that way as well? I mean, let me think how to put right way...
When read Manga, some can be goal oriented not interested to read romance, and Manga suffer as it become detective centric. Some how it become cliche or notion having Ran getting angry for entertainment purposes, as article said, Ran become robot in long run after first portray simple and nice in first two books, or part when Ran had times nearly caught Conan. Series originally meant to be short than longer as Gosho admitted he don't know how to end series, running out of ideas and Ran looked terrible when fail many times.
If I don't read article I might be shallow but hearing from you brain get to gear, they fallen into norms accepting case centric is better with repeated patterns we suddenly grow tired of Ran; but truth is, likely it create rift of misunderstanding, Ran suddenly don't have goal any more somewhere in middle, may end up label as Kogoro's daughter result movie writer think it's one part of idea her identity is becoming cameo than find goal to contribute. I'm not sure how to see her until she started loosen up instead go straight scolding. She now sound little happier with Sera together, I do hope Gosho use that opportunity, or wishes to see good scene he can develop her with Sera of frienship plot as it can bring out different side of Ran.

I think you are saying that the unexpected length of the series lead to Gosho putting Ran in a repeating cycle of ideas instead of any real evolving or interesting character (or any evolving of her character takes place in such a long period of time that everyone loses patience). In which case, I agree. But the other problem is that the writing for her has gotten worse. Worse writing + samey character can be a disaster.

On a slightly more optimistic note, after rethinking some things, there is enough evidence (especially some of Haibara's comments) to make me think Gosho does have at least some self-awareness about some of the issues about Ran. There's actually a good chance that the series length have delayed some event that could justify this. I've noticed enough subtle character changes that make sense but have taken forever to have a point (especially, again, from Haibara) that I could buy this.

I don't dislike Ran, and she doesn't bore me either, but I get annoyed when I think about AiCon not happening because of ShinRan, which can be just viewed as a "silly high-school lovey-dovey" couple when compared to AiCon. But trust me, if there was no Haibara we would far from have a big problem with Ran.

Me to I mean ShinRan is so boing now and there whole relationship is forced but with AiCon both can be themselves I just do not see why Gosho likes this paring so much

First of all, no character bashing. Second, this is really out of topic.

While I'm more lenient with this sort of posting in the AiCon thread (which managed to be pretty self contained for the last year or two), it's truly unwarranted to leak this behavior into other threads.

I don't really see what more she can do.
She should not be involved in the Black Organization plot yet in my opinion. I don't like it when she is forced too much in the story.

Only when she finds out Conan's true identity can she be involved and I think that should happen closer to the end. I'm hoping Gosho writes a really good arc when the time comes.

The actual premise of the story means she can't develop too much.

I don't mind her crying, as I cry a lot and her screaming when she sees her body is probably for dramatic effect (and I would do the same.)

I don't like how she has to be in almost every episode, but I guess she has to be to explain why Conan can go to crime scenes.

I understand why many dislike her though. She can be annoying sometimes as can most characters.

Ran for now is too childish, I think. She knows karate, she tries (not very hard, though) to look as if she's strong, but in reality she is too much a crybaby. I laughed a bit while watching the episode with Ran and Sonoko (and Conan) went to the horror shool club (and when the patient died "during" the surgery), and Ran kept Conan in a way as if he would be a shield or crucifix.

Ran indeed can only gain when she will learn the truth behind Conan... but I hope after that she will become more mature. As Gentaphoenix mentioned above, for now Ran is more like a kinda cute addition to the series than a real supportive character.

I wanted to point out how intelligent and interesting this thread has turned out. It's actually a pleasure to read, only one or two troll posts that needed to be skipped.

I've gotten slightly more optimistic concerning Ran's role, what with her confirmed involvement with Sera and the underlying suspicion moments.
As many issues as there might be with the length of the series / Gosho's apparent lack of romance writing skills, I'm somehow getting vibes that the prospect of a turn for the better concerning Ran is there. :D

Ah, this thread....I went back and read through the several discussions I had with other people. Good stuff, very enjoyable read. This topic serves as a great reminder of the difference between DCTP and the vast majority of other forums. It's incredible that at no point in these 16 pages did discussion completely break down, especially when the focus is on such a controversial character. For the record, I still stand by everything I said, over half a year later :P

I never replied to Sonoci's reply to mine, I should get around to that someday..then again, guess it doesn't matter at this point. I could see and understand the opposing point of view but ultimately still disagree on some of the premises of the argument, so it's mostly a "agree to disagree" thing.

I have to say, I'm a convinced ShinRan supporter, but still I pointed out the issues I had with the portrayal of the relationship some time back. I found the scene of Eisuke confession kinda troublesome, but I already wrote a bunch of lines on this.
I still (or because of that?) I thoroughly enjoyed your posts, Kudo Shinichi. =) Just wanted to let you know! Because in the end, I thought it would be comforting to have your opinion myself... if it wasn't for my utterly and completely cynical and pessimistic nature, haha. ;D
