I think what mainly captures me to DC is the dynamic genres of it.

Without Shinichi you wouldn't have the romantic drama, though I don't really care for Soap Operas... There wouldn't be that intensive plot of the whole "Secret Identity" factor. In my view, one of the main reasons why DC is so great is because it has all types of genres - It has action, suspense, mystery, drama, romance... It even sometimes makes you think of things outside the box, and if you look at certain habits characters do - You see Shinichi kicking a soccer ball to a point on the wall when he was younger, people have imitated that and have actually improved their soccer skills greatly. Its like Burn Notice.

I was thinking more of an Azumanga Daioh type series with the Detective Boys.

That would change the whole feel of the series and increase DB episodes by a 1000000000000%. Do you really want to unleash that evil on the word, DO YOU?

No thank you! We wouldn't have DC if there was no Shinichi.

Seriously, if the series was about just Conan (meaning, no shrinking Shinichi), then Conan being so smart would seem out of place and off for a child his age. At least it's a little more believable that the reason he knows so much (can even read Kanji way more advanced for a kid his age) is because he already learned it.

His reaction to death/murders would be off too. Shinichi grew up to that stuff, and is desensitized to it.

Also, if Shinich didn't shrink, we wouldn't have Ai's character, the BO storyline would be a moot point in general since "Conan" wouldn't have much of a reason to learn about them, the Agasa wouldn't have any reason to make gadgets for Conan to use, there would be no need for Conan to live with Ran and Kogoro, because he wouldn't be after the BO, etc.

So yeah, we would definitely need Shinichi for DC to work.

If Shinichi didn't exist, and it was just Conan who got involved in a big case, and wanted to solve it, then he could go to Teitan Elementary with the DBys, and have a school boy crush on the older Ran, and just be solving crimes and wanting to take down the BO...he could be a super intelligent kid detective...

I see the vision....but for now, DC is better with Shinichi...
